Center console replacement suggestions

I'm at the point where I've decided to replace my trashed center console on my 87 Formula (you know how it looks--cracked on both sides, looks like crap).

I've heard of people replacing 3rd gen center consoles with 4th gen; has anyone done this and do you recommend it?

Or I could just get a replacement 3rd gen center console but I haven't really been able to find anything new for less than $200. What should I expect to pay for it and where is a good place to find these things?

Thanks,

David

I've never heard of the replace the center console of a third generation with a fourth generation.. The only thing I can say is stick with the third.. It'll definately look more in place with the car.. Ebay has some right now that are at $55 that end tomarrow morning.. There is another for like 26 right now.. Just check the pictures to make sure you don't get F*cked... I've gotten some good stuff for cheap off ebay.. Got a replacement spoiler for the back of my car when the chick hit it for like 30 bucks... The one piece I needed was $45 alone.. I got all 3 for $30.. SO definately check there.. IT would be the best place I could recomend.

I agree, go ebay, especially thirdgenparts.com's auctions. everything the have is quality. As for the 4th gen, I'm pretty sure you have to swap the dash with the console, do a search, there was a few posts on the swap a month or so ago.

One member on this board by the name of Amorget has done that w/ a 4th gen console. He says that it uses the same mounting brackets & it fits very snug & looks very good.
Personally what I would do it replace it w/ a GTA console b/c those look readically different & look very good.

Engine: 403 LSx (Pending) / 355 Tuned Port
Transmission: T56 Magnum (Pending) / T5

Funny, my GTA console looks the same as the one in my 86 Firebird looked.

Speaking from experiance, trying to find a perfect used firebird console is an exercise in futility. All of them have warped sides, or are spliting apart. I looked at 10 or so at the local junkyard, and ordered one over the internet before I finally just laid down the money at a GM dealer. In actuality I replaced the entire console, the radio/hvac surround, and the shifter plate. The difference is measurable. I enjoy the car a lot more knowing its perfect. Also you know what you're getting, you know its never been abused, you know it'll last.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Drew hit exactly what I'm thinking. I know it will cost a pretty good chunk of change to get a new console but once it is replaced it will be something that I definitely don't treat like crap.

So should my local Pontiac parts guy be able to square me away on getting an authentic console that's never been used? Any idea how much it will run me?

Thanks,

David

$350 is roughly what I spent.
The console alone with a new armrest, rear ashtray, etc as its a complete assembly is $215 according to my receipt.
