Carbon fiber stuff

I was checking out the tech article on this and it sorta sounded like fiberglassing. Has anyone done carbon fiber? If so, is it like fiberglassing. I want to make some interior pieces, and was going to make them out of fiberglass, till I saw the article. Any help would be apriciated.

I love to make stuff myself. I think just going out and buying stuff that I can do myself is not as good. If you saw my car, you'd understand.

I made my own aluminum gauge cluster for $2.00 and an afternoon of drilling filing and grinding.

The carbon fiber materials are only about $50 and it sounds pretty easy.

Anyone that pays $300 for that stuff deserves to loose the $$

As for quality, just take your time. What if it takes you 2 weekends to do it, you're saving a few hundres $$ and you can actually say you did it yourself.

Besides, if you're good at it you can do it for your buddies (for a minor profit) and recover your costs.

Hey Many, have you worked with carbon fiber? Some of the center console will be aluminum, and other pieces will be carbon fiber. What I need to know is, in the article it said something about foam. Well, I've never used foam when fiberglassing, and I might just want to cover some existing pieces with the carbon fiber. My situation is the interior is dead. I'm also changing from auto to stick. So some pieces need to be made, or modified enough to work.

hey carbon fiber I mean real carbon is a lot like fiberglass but cost big $$$$$ and is harder to work with then glass but is much stronger and lighter then glass. There are diffrent grades of carbon. We are thinking of making some body parts out of good fiber but not sure if it will sell for the high $$$ they do have int. pcs. made from a carbon fiber look plastic and other meterials

I work with carbon fiber in the Navy. The carbon fiber cloth that we use is thicker and more difficult to mold than glass. It doesn't seem to want to conform to surfaces you apply it to unless you use a vacuum bag. The plus side is that you can probably use less plies than glass for whatever project you're doing and it'll be the same strength.
