uh...where's the spare tire?

Okay, laugh at me all you want... I don't have many posts here anyway. I wasn't sure where to post this, but I figured this is the most appropriate forum. I've poked around the trunk quite a bit and really have no clue where the spare tire is. I'm sure I should have one, unless the guy I bought the car off of was a little greedier than I thought...any help would be appreciated.

LMAO, Im not laughin at you but thats funny. Because it almost happened to me. When I got the idea of taking the spare out for weigh I looked for it...but thats about it. I got pissed so I got out the manual for the car and found a picture of the spare tire. Like the guy said its behind the right pannel in your trunk if you are looking at the back of the car.

You have to take a few plastic "Screws" out, you can just use a coin if you have to. It will be inside there....Kind of a bitch to get out though.

I had the same problem. I thought the guy i bought my camaro from mighta "not remembered to put the spare back in." But before i made a fool of myself and called him i had to be sure. I looked in my haynes book for 2 seconds before i got sick of looking. Later on that week i looked in the compartment on the left and figured something had to be on the right.Of course the spare had been there all along...
Im happy to know im not the only one.

thats funny this happens to so many people,I wasn't sure where mine was until I put in my speakers,a week after I bought the car.I was just standing there scratching my head, thinking "I hope I don't get a flat today, because I don't know where the F&&k the spare is!" . I was amazed at how small the dognut was,I prayed I would never have to use it. later I replaced it with a bigger one from my friends old bonniville. it's a little heavier, but much safer and less funny looking than the original.

Now, if only they could make one that would inflate to a 245/50/16

Ward, I think you got the special spare, instead of the mini one most of us have- it's always inflated. I'd love to find one of those folded-up spares in a junkyard...

Mine is an 85 and I have the compact type. I think that it is supposed to come with a can of air, but I got an air compresser(spelling) that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

The thought of putting that pitiful little spare on with the rest of my wheels drove me to carry a full size spare in the trunk well. We don't have much of a usable trunk anyway unless you guys have some massive subwoofers tucked in there. )

MikeD, yeah, it was an option on the "better" cars (IROCs, T/A's, etc). In fact my 1986 Firebird's owners manual shows three stowage methods for spares: A full-size always-inflated spare, a compact always-inflated donut spare, and the full-size deflated spare. Like OldBlueZ said, the full-size deflated comes with a can of compressed air...

I actually needed my spare tire today...guess it's a good thing I asked where it was. Thanks for the help.

PS. It's a real bitch to get that stuff back in the spare tire compartment...I was about to kick my car in frustration until I remembered how I could never deface such a thing of beauty.

Ok, well i know where mine is, but when i inflate it, how big will it get? I have a convertible with the deflated spare...It is damn near impossible to get out and even harder to get in there. I am just curious as to how big this tire is.

Just a bit of info for anyone with the spare that needs to be inflated -
When you inflate it, it doesn't always pop up straight. I sometimes folds out to the side first, looking like it will pop off the bead. I had mine do this, and I didn't think it was right so I didn't inflate it. My friend, the previous owner of the IROC, said that he had inflated that spare and that was how it did it.

My tire does the same thing. I didnt fill it up all the way with air, thinking it would come off the rim.
what will happen to the tire if you keep putting air in it. Will it eventually fill up all the way and not pop to one side?

I get a feeling there might not be so many"rattle questions, if more people knew where their spare/jack was.
Check that area for "big time rattles".

I know what you're saying about rattles...I had to use my spare a few days ago, and I apparently never got it back in there quite right. Getting a lot of rattles...if anyone could post some pictures of that area or step-by-step of how all that stuff goes back in there correctly, I think it might help out a lot of us with poor memories

I have the compressed teeny spare. I don't have the cannister to inflate it however. I checked with a dealer and they said the cannister is over $50 - yikes. Anyone have a suggestion of a source for a cannister at a more reasonable price?

BTW I know you can get those cans at auto parts stores that reinflate tires. However I understand that that they inject some vile foam into the tire that will render the inflatable spare unusable.

Someone else mentioned having a tire inflator that plugs into the lighter? Do those work, and are they too bulky to fit in the same space as the spare tire?

And finally, should I just ignore it and rely on my AAA+ membership? After all, if I get a flat I can always call AAA to come inflate the tire for me. Hell, they'll even mount it for me. That way I don't have to haul around a heavy compressed air cylinder or a bulky pump run off the cigarette lighter!

Anyway, input?

wishmaster! lol, i thought the same thing.

i got a flat back in denver during the winter, and when i got the spare on, i started to fill it with fix-a-flat (the spare, hey, no compressor.)

Anyway, the tire looked like it was sliding off the rim!!! so i let loose some pressure, and drove it home.

Later on here in claifornia, i popped another tire, (man i suck) anyway, i did the same thing with the spare. and took it to firestone.

They filled up the spare tire and man, i had it WAY underinflated. it looked almost as big as my 245's when totally inflated! the "slipping" off the rim was just the tire expanding.

Good to know im not the only one who thought it was slipping!

Thats good to know, but I am still freaked out about filling that sspare up. Something about it doesnt look right. The way the tire fills just to one side. I thought "jesus christ this tire is going to fly off the rim is I keep filling it up"
Anyway, hey once you use the air cannister can I just fill it back up with compressed air? or do I have to buy a new one?

I believe the cars with the smaller spare that has to be inflated with the canister have posi rear, the ones with open diffs have the pre-inflated tire. Has to do with overall tire height so the posi unit doesn't get burned up.

When I bought my car, I actually got the dumb@ss dealer to reduce the price for the missing spare and tools. Six months later, I found them hiding inside the right rear quarter panel when I was trying to locate some rattles. I felt like a complete idiot but lucky at the same time. These days I'm driving around w/o the spare or the jack because they've been making too much noise. I'll stick a bunch of foam tape in there when the temps come back up a little.

And yeah I agree with that idea of posting a pic to show us unenlightened ones how to stow the stuff properly. The illustration on the plastic panel doesn't apply in my case because my car came with a slightly different jack. It's not the scissor type. It's got a square cross section tube on which a ratchet mechanism slides. Something akin to a horizontal hi-lift jack.
