Manual ***** merely unscrew

Firebird auto shifters have a 'staple' clip on the fronside of the shifter holding them down

The ball shifter on my Camaro was only held on by the button on top,, it pulled right off

The square shifters in Camaros,, I don't know,, I guess the button & a clip similar to Firebirds?
Anyone else know ?

The ball shifters on camaros are held on by a C clip under the button, and it's a PITA to get off.. also a PITA to get back on, so usually left off once removed =P

The clip on my shifter broke, so i just found a spare snap-ring the right size and put it on. The **** fits tight enough that it doesn't slide down the shaft on its own, and the snap-ring keeps it from coming off in your hand when you push the button.
