new interior

hey i went to auto mat corp by me and priced out a new interior. i got blown away for almost $5000 and that was for 2 recaro buckets all new floor and side carpets. the door capreting also is going to be done and the trunk. he will also redoe the sail panals and the headliner with the visor. basically all u can think of and dynamat the whole car so i wont hear anything anymore inside the car. does this seem fair or does anyone have any better ideas. im doing this cause i want to make the car factory new. i had great paint job done and the car has 53,000 miles. i know some might think im crazy but i love the thing, i dont know why though. in the spring im getting the ramjet 350 put in with the rearend and upgrade the tranny. i should spend about 13 thou total but it will be all new from the suspension up. for now the engine will get ne headers cause i can use them later on anyway.

If I were you, I'd get an exact breakdown of cost... like how much for seats, headliner, etc, all separately. Then see if you can beat it yourself.

[edit] Oh I forgot to add- to me, that's INSANE. I'm sure most of that is hourly charge.. put carpet in yourself! $120 from http://www.1aauto.com - and that's a GM authorized repro carpet (ACC). Buy seats yourself! Buy a headliner from somewhere else! Does the door carpet really need replacement? I think the Firebird/Camaro restoration catalogs (anyone know the webpages) sell door panels.

Yeah any one can put in seats and new door panels. If you want I'll do your whole interior 4500.

$5,000????????? WTF!!! That's a lot of money. You can do an engine & drivetrain swap for cheaper. Granted I know that Recaro seats are expensive but do you really need those racing seats w/ all the race seat belt slots???? The full carpet from the place that Tom P. said is $220 both sets of carpet and that includes shipping. You can redo your seats by getting seats out of a 4th gen Camaro or Firebird and those look really good. I can get the fronts in cloth for $150 and another $50 for the rears. Sail panels and visors are things that you can do yourself and those are really cheap to do. Price for material is your only cost; let's estimate $10 + your time. A covered headliner is $150. You can buy 2 13ft. rolls of Dynomat and do it yourself. I got the 2 rolls from Ubid.com for $30. All you are paying for is labor but I would of been embarassed if I were that guy to quote you that f*ckin price.
Let's look at it like this if you get all the stuff yourself you would pay $610 + your time (maybe a day off from work) for the entire new interior compared to $5,000. It looks like you will choose the more sensible price.
I personally installed the new carpet (went from Dove Gray to Black), Dynomated the entire car, plan to install '95 Z28 seat, black headliner & redo the sail panels & visors w/ black material. You can also change the color if you want to as well like me. Hope that we have talked you out of going back to that HIGH PRICED a$$hole

Hey mike and everyone else from this post,

I am redoing and trying to customize my interior for my convertible Camaro. I would like to here your guys thoughts. I like the idea of fourth gen seats, but where do you get them? Let me tell you everything I need, as I have had major vandalism.

New mid console with console lid.

Auto transmission console cover

Both back sides panels, as they were ripped out to get to my 300 dollar 6x9's.

New Carpet

New Door panels as I am adding power windows and door locks.

Any and all ideas from mild to wild I want to here as I want to show this car.

Thanks guys,

James

Check this out bro.... I plan to show my car off as well. I had a very expensive paint job put on last year plus my system will be installed this week (a 4 day job at the shop). This is where I plan to show my car is at the IASCA competitions and thensome. I already think I put a breakdown on how much the average stuff will cost my earlier post but where you are going to get nailed is in the price for that center console. A new console door is $160 alone not including the skeleton and the boot and the shift plate. My advice would be to go to your local wrecking yard and find out what they have. That's where you can find the seats for your car from a 4th gen car is at the junk yard. I think thats all I can think of for your interior and good luck w/ the project.

Thanks Mike.

But I can't find any fourth gens anywhere. I actually deal in some third gen parts, though Firebirds and Camaros I pick up here and there but I love the fourth gen interior idea. Im in southern cal, and none of the palces in orange county/ riverside have fourth gens, I mean you are lucky to find an 88 SC. Let me know if you hear of anything.

The thought just ocurred to me- maybe the guy quoted you $5,000 because he didn't want to do the job?

Thanks engineboy,

but their site must be down as I have tried Netscape and IE and it wont come up. IT finds the server, but either the ISP is down or they are receiving a HUGE amount of traffic (doubted) I will try again tomorrow, as I have now made up my mind to convert the interior over to fourth gen.

Thanks,

James
