How Can I stop surface rust
ive got an 82 berlinetta that im redoing the body on and the problem ive got is the body has surface rust coming out all over it, the hood, doors sides and roof. ive stripped it down to the metal in areas but theres pitting in it that no matter how muck i try i cant get all of the rust out, even used naval jelly and other rust removal products to no avail. its the original paint on the car so im guessing it was an issue with the factory finish or something considering its all over the entire car. is there any way to stop the rust and keep it from coming back through the paint. where i live i dont have access to a place that can chemically strip the body nor do i have access to a sandblaster so im really at a loss as to what to do
i took the hood off(im replacing it anyways) and stripped some of it down and primed part of the area and then another section i painted with rustoleum rust reformer and then primed, on the area where i just used primer, in a matter of 2 or 3 days the rust was already bleeding through where as the area i used the rust reformer on first still hasnt shown any rust coming through after about 4 months of being outside. would coating the whole car with the rust reformer before priming and painting it hold up or am i just gonna continue to run into problems again in the near future

Unless you're using an epoxy primer moisture will still be able to reach the metal. Even the Rustoleum "sealer" primer. Anyway, in the spots that you haven't been able to get all the rust out of the pits, I'd look at the back of the panel or inside of the doors to see if they're rusting through, if that's not the case one of those 3m paint stripper wheels and naval jelly in turns untill it's gone will speed things up.
If the rust reformer is the white liquid that turns black, then I'd recommend against coating the entire car with it, it's a beeotch to sand and its hard for the primer and paint to adhere, not to mention its only a bandaid over the rust.
Best way would be to derust, prep and paint one part at a time, then move on to the next bit untill it's all done. Yes, it will take a while but you'll know that your paint won't flake and the rust won't reappear.

Re: How Can I stop surface rust
the rustoleum stuff sprays out and looks just like flat black primer straight out of the can, ive tried the 3M wheels and the naval jelly but it just seems like im getting nowhere with it. the insides of the panels are all clean and rust free its almost like the car was painted with flash rust on the surface and being that the cars 30 years old that flash has turned quite pitty but its not through the metal. just getting frustrated because i want to get it painted but i dont want it to be bubbling and rusting through shortly after i do it

I know it feels like its taking forever, but this is the longest part. I wish I had done a better job getting rid of the rust before I moved forward, you can see how poor a job I did on my car by clicking my sig pic.
What are you planning on using when you paint it by the way?

Re: How Can I stop surface rust
not sure yet what im gonna paint it with, been looking at the trinity 1945 starfire line but finding mixed reviews on it so i may just go to the local napa and see what i can get there. im actually using the 82 as a donor body for my 88 which i left parked behind the house for 10 years. didnt have any paint issues with that one other than fading but sitting there pretty much rotted the floor and frame to point of there being nothing left of it so any body panels i use from that one i dont have to worry about with the rust but it still leaves me with the roof, rear quarters and one door to deal with

I hate to say it but your really going to need a sandblasted. Trust me you can spend months doing it the way you are or spend days doing it the right way. Once you do a part with a blaster and paint it with epoxy you will see the difference. I did mine this way and its flawless...I bought a cheap hand held unit and sand for around 200 it did the whole car..

Re: How Can I stop surface rust
i was actually just looking at some cheap hand held units from harbor freight a couple minutes ago, anyone tried these and have any idea how well they work, i can get the sand for about 6 or 7 dollars a 50lb bag where i work so thinking this might be a good option

I can't tell you how long they'll last but if you can get sand for $10 bucks a bag then go for it! Just remember to get a good p95 respirator for sandblasting and when you spray epoxy.
I'd try and find an affordable urethane, acrylic enamel in general has pretty poor color and gloss holdout, or so I've heard. If you're going to do a metallic I'd strongly urge you to go to base/clear, just for ease of aplication.

*****Correction*****
So you bought a cheap sandblaster for under $200? If you don't mind, what is it that you have to complete the job? I wanna blast my hood because it has surface rust. So what is it that cost $200? Sorry but I have no idea what is involved with sandblasting.

Re: How Can I stop surface rust
i actually just bought a handheld cambell hausfeild unit off amazon and was amazed at how quickly it removed ALL of the rust in the spot i tried it on, my only complaint is its just a small stream that comes out of the gun so it takes quite a while to do a large area, the stream only cleans an area about the size of a dime if that at one time but it does get to bare metal quickly its just a matter of being very time consuming since you can only hit such a small area at once, the handheld unit cost me about 60 dollars and a 50lb bag of blasting sand cost 7.50 so ive got less than 70 dollars into it at the moment
