Paint Ideas

I have a 90 camaro that I am building for drag and was wanting ideas on paint schemes and paints I do not wsnt to spend a lot for my paint job considering what I am using it for. Post pics of ur all out drag cars and what paint you used would help out or just input on paint. I might let someone come up with a paint scheme for me that is not to extreme to do.

Re: Paint Ideas

for an all out drag car, id get a vinyl wrap, or go with an easy and simple single color cheapo paint job. if you happen to put the car into the wall, the vinyl wrap is infinately reproducable. meaning you just call the company back and have them reprint a new wrap portion from the original file and rewrap after you fix the damage. single color el chepo paint for the same reason, you can easily respray after you fix any damage.

its an all out drag car, its ment ot go fast. it doesnt need to look good while doing it....and the money you save from painting it, can go into making it go faster.

Re: Paint Ideas

Are you talking bout a vinyl wrap like how some businesses have advertising on the car one place that comes to mind its radio stations is that what ur talking about. If so is there anywhere I could find a template of a third gen for it. And what do u define as el cheapo paint. And u am not to large in to flames ad I am stripes and scallops. But if u can design me a flame job that is cheap and doable I might pay for the idea and put ur name on the car for the design.

Re: Paint Ideas

the amount of rattle cans itll take to cover the car will cost you atleast $100. and then after that, itll still look like crap. you can get a an el cheepo gun from harbor freight for $15 that is actually a nice piece. theres forums dedicated to that little purple gun.

Re: Paint Ideas

the duplicolor paint is a laquer based paint, the tractor stuff is enamel and will hold up better in the long run. you can do designs in the enamel just the same as you would with any other single stage paint.

Re: Paint Ideas

flat black is one of the HARDEST colors to get to look right. flat black shows every tiny flaw in the metal surface. not a big deal on a drag car though if you dont mind seeing the dings.

Re: Paint Ideas

you may think its flawless until you lay the flat black on there. it will make a spec of dust in the paint stand out like a sore thumb..... and since its a flat single stage, is not like you can sand it out and polish it up.

Re: Paint Ideas

ST1202 is a semi gloss paint that is UV stable sold through PPG Stores. It is ready to shoot premixed and fairly cheap. Easy to touch up and wears well for a body accent or full color.
The Vinyl Wrap will run in the $300-500 range and is designed BY YOU FOR YOU. If you want some gawd awfull colors and graphics that is your baby. These run about a fifth of the cost a comprable painter will charge.

Just called Keystone Automotive near me. PPG ST1202 $90 a gallon. Call your local PPG automotive paint supplier and they should have it or can get it.

Re: Paint Ideas

Well I have used it in the past, and it is a semi/low gloss flat black. I like it for accent color when used with other blacks and gray or silvers. For example you spray the inner fenders with this color and firewall in the same black. Now if the components on the firewall are a low gloss black that has a bit more shine they stand out. Even with a flat on one side and a gloss on the other side it looks nice.

Re: Paint Ideas

You want something that's different? Looks wicked? Cheap? Easy to spray? That's exactly what we were looking for when we fixed my wife's car (she picked out the color). Imagine how aggressive this color would make a Camaro look. It was $60 for a gallon on ebay. It's ready to spray. Just pour it in your gun and pull the trigger.

I'm the one who did the tractor paint thread. I used the cheap $15 purple gun on the red Firebird and with the green on the Miata. I've also used it to paint several other things around the house.

It's hard to believe that the car was totaled with a crunched front sub frame a week before I took these pics. We put a whole new front end under and on it and painted it in about 4 days.

Re: Paint Ideas

I've read your thread and I loved it. I like that finish tho but not the green I think it would look good in yellow with the flat finish but I don't want to pay a lot just on paint alone. I've got devilbiss guns but personally I would not spray the farm paint in it because of how old they are. Ive been looking at that harbor freight gun to play with until I got new guns.

Re: Paint Ideas

Plan on running a 383 I am going to make a build thread on it and the car once I get all my ideas set in place. I like the red on the car but with 6 inch cowl it's a little to much for me if I did red I'd prolly go with a dark cherry or something in that tone. I was originally do a dark purple but leaned away from it. The flat yellow is from a Chevelle I saw years ago that just cought my eye. I want to do headlight buckets, gfx, and my spoiler black. I have a full black interior and am doing engine bay in black and the underside but I really don't want a black car there are just many of them. I would prefer a design with the paint overall over just a single color.

Re: Paint Ideas

Satin colors spray nice and even. Stay away from flats, very difficult to spray a flawless finish. Satin black, or red look nice. A nicely sprayed satin with gloss black accents/embles would look great. Look for a sherwin williams auto paint supply, they can mix you up any color, cheap prices from low end to high end paints.

I have the cheap purple gun from HF as well. I use it as a throw around, while it sprays nice I dont like it for bc/cc's. I use it to spray single stages no problem and knock out small projects. I don't mind shooting everything from primers to clear through it. It just doesnt spray clears as well as some of my better guns with smaller tip sizes.

What kind of DeVilbiss do you have? They make a good gun I have a few. Honestly my favorite overall gun right now is my 100$ Sharpe fx3000. I use a 1.4mm tip for bc and a 1.3mm tip for the clear. Lays clear like glass, very user friendly and comfortable.

Don't you want a drag car to stand out? Crazy graphics, bright colors ect. Satin jobs are becoming pretty big though too.

Just remember something that looks nice on one car, wont on another. There is a reason why fat chicks shouldn't wear belly shirts or bikinis.

Re: Paint Ideas

The guns I am not sure of top of my head they were my dads that he used to use he loved them. I have used them a few times and there great. I believe I got a Sherwin Williams and MAB about a mile or so from me I love ppg and DuPont but don't like the price my dad was certified by ppg in 97 I think. All he ever sprayed threw those guns for at least 10 years before he stopped painting in 2000.

That is very true

I would not mind a satin or a low gloss paint I really like the hockey stick stripes on the side and thought bout running them I know someone has got a yellow maro with the strips I just can't think of his name on here I got a pic of his car on my phone and I like that yellow a lot and I'd like it in a satin look on my car.
