Best way to weigh down my rear end?

The weathers getting harsh out here recently. Ive fishtailed and spun out into a complete 180 about 3 times in the past week, just in rain. How can i weigh down the rear end? I have a full tank. But should i use wood or something else? Or would that harm the car? Thanks

The best way to weigh down your rear end is to put junk in your trunk !!!

Well something that would benefit year round is a battery relocate to the back. One of the most common racing tricks.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

how about learn how to drive?

3 times in a week? Thats excessive.

I used to put sandbags in the bed of my pickups. Good weight. Easy to position, and multiple uses in the spring when things clear up.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

If you don't already, put some decent all season tires on it. Those will make a HUGE difference. And like the other person said, do a sandbag or two on each side of the well in the trunk. That'll help a little.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

1) Get rid of crappy bald mismatched tires

2) Slow down, takes a lot of stupidity to do 180s with a couple hundred horsepower

3) Get sandbags

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

Check the tread on your rear tires. Worn tires will easily hydroplane. Good treaded tires are much less likely to hydroplane but the biggest way to avoid it is speed control and watching the road for water puddles & reducing your speed as need. Much better to get somewhere late than to get there MUCH later with a wrecked car.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

Yeah man you need a driver mod.

I had completely bald tires for an entire summer, the back end got away from me once, and I chopped the throttle and corrected with the wheel.

I don't claim to be a good driver, since I have 0 track time, but I tend to be able to keep control of my car in any given weather conditions.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

Exactly. No one is a great driver. Experienced is the word I would use but even then from what you have said you aren't.

Dont relocate the battery. Get good tires and put sand bags or anything heavy you might have around. I carried a full spare, tools and a full sized jack during the winter I drove my 92. Never lost control of it once. I did drive like a old lady but thats how you survive winters with our cars.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

Haha guys i know no ones a great driver. The thing with my car is,I would turn a corner without even touching the gas. Then when my car wasnt moving at all,i would just tap it with my toe,not even my foot. And it would spin out.My buddy has done the same in his Camaro a lot more than me.And my buddy in his fourthgen has done it a few times as well.Probably because we're teenagers but Shhhshhh.
Im just more use to driving a mini van with front wheel drive, and a truck. Which in both, the drive tires are weighed down. OH well, ill get it. Thanks guys. IM probably putting her up anyways someday this week. The roads are beginning to ice up.

Have a sealed enclosure subwoofer box and amplifiers in the trunk well.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

Put something back there you can use like floor jack ,jack stands, tools etc.Since you have posi. you may even consider a full size tire because a donut can cause damage to the unit.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

Tires first...

Buy an aftermarket TQ arm - they will allow you to plant the rear much better than a couple of sandbags. Plus it will help you hook up at the track.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

It all takes time and paitence. I'll be the first to admit that these cars can get away from you with a little too much throttle when the road is wet. Gotta love the torque

But like everyone keeps saying, tires are key. I've also got a 12 inch sub and a amp in my trunk to that adds free useful weight. lol

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

Sandbags are the cheapest and easiest fix, assuming your tires are in good shape. My Tires are in great shape. I could get by without sand bags in the winter here in NW Ohio if I had to, but 3/60 Lbs bags under the hatch/over the rear axle make winter alot more manageable........

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but it's driver related.. You're on a third gen forum. We all own the same cars and not everyone else is having this problem..

Buy an aftermarket TA so he doesn't spin out in wet weather? Thats a bit much don't you think?

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

The real issue is the kid is 17. He just needs to learn how to drive.

No offense man, I was 17 once and spun my moms 5.0lx around a time or two as well.

Maybe, but it will work in the wet, dry, and snow better than most other options.

But as others have pointed out being 17 in a RWD car is not exactly something you can remedy by sandbags or a TQ arm.

Where you are located at in NW Indiana? I'm in the NE area and we haven't had any of this weather that you're speaking of. We got some snow showers last week but it just melted and made the pavement wet. I'm curious as to how you're experiencing icy roads already when the temps have been in the 50s and even 60s for the past couple weeks.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

I got the car under control now.It was mainly whenever turning a corner in the city or in residential areas.I Left work and when i pulled out i barely touched the gas and next thing i knew,im facing my boss in the window in front of me. I dont know it hasnt really done it recently. And its mainly just ice and rain. If the pavements wet,my car will NOT get traction. I have Eagle GT's that have about 85% tread still on them.I usually have a full tank of gas and ive got my sub box.I think its just because i wasnt use to driving it before and i never really judged the power of that car. And im only 17 so its that too. I was just so use to the way my van and the truck handled and worked,i thought itd be the same toward my car.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

be carefull out there! last night i visited my 27 year old brother in the hospital, two weeks ago he was hit by a 21year old driver. the driver said he was learning how to drive stick (its a lie). my brother was in between his parked truck finishing loading his truck up. the truck that hit him fish tailed out of control spinning 270deg around smashing into my bro and his truck.

my brother can't walk, he has a broken pelvis. i hope he will have a full recovery, fingers crossed.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

does the car have a posi rear? that will really make the car come around on a wet or snowy road..it's one time where a one- legger is better!it won't come around on you, but you might still get stuck....as for weight in the back: don't put anything back there that you don't want to get hit with if you ever wreck! floor jacks and other items like that will kill ya! sand bags in the far back would be good.

3) Get sandbags
Amen on the Tires. Those can make a HUGE difference.

The ones on my GTA are getting way up there now. I'm replacing them for the season next year but wont' be driving the car again except to move it from a parking stall to another.

On the way back from Thirdgenfest this year when it was raining 65-70mph was perfectly fine. However hit it up to 75mph and suddenly the Rev's would rise and I'd have to back off on the throttle because i was hydroplaning the rear.

Going with Nitto NT05's all around on a 275/40/17 for my ZR1 wheels. The car is NOT driven year round so its okay to use these.

Not sure what I'm gonna put on the G6 for this winter, still deciding.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

I had all season goodyears on my 91 just a 3.1 v6 and I was getting stuck and sliding all over the place the first winter I drove it and that was with 250lbs of sand in the trunk... Then I bought a couple of used wintermaster snow tires on old 14in plain wheels for 30 bucks and I can't even explain the difference it made. I don't used sand any more, I just put on the wheels with my snow tires and i have yet to get stuck or unintentionly spinout/lose control. All I'm saying is that snow tires are definitely the way to go and its not too expensive if you find the right deal.

I know I'm 17 and I have a lead brick for a foot, so If I give it the toe, I'm going to fast. Just get some tires that are good in the wet (with water channels) and put some sand bags in the back. Also, a word from the wise, Drive with your Brain, not your *****. Although it is hard to tell which is which when your seventeen...

Also T/Atime, sorry to hear that, he'll be in my prayers.

Re: Best way to weigh down my rear end?

I'm running BFG G-force T/A's 245/50/16 on my iroc and lately ive driven it in the snow, off road in the mud and everything else because my truck is in the shop. The tires have over 20k on them and have done their share of burnouts, but have been rotated, and they go great forward, just dont try to back up because you will get stuck in your own tracks. Subs, amp, jack and donut is the only weight in the back. Only had it hydroplane once at 55mph in blinding rain. cut it down to 35 after that.

but i had some 225's on it for alittle while and it constantly spun out pulling out of roads on wet pavement (yes i was giving it the throttle) but with normal driving they weren't bad

Smart young man to face up. Thank you! We all live and learn, I have . My 16 year old wants my 91'WS6. Forget the naysayer's, 3/60 Lbs bags of sand and responsible driving will make things better with winter on our doorstep! I'm 39 and have driven rear wheel drive cars all my life. WEIGHT is not the answer but helps ALOT.
