82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
Hello all. Years ago I came across a 82 Z28 RPO LU5 SMC functioning hood. A guy practically had to beg me to take it off his hands. I haven seen it in a couple years. As i recall it needs a little patching here and there. All of the induction hardware was there and functioning. I am going to patch, prime and sell it. I can not find any currently for sale. I was wondering if you guys might be able to tell me where to price it.

$1000?????
Is it plated in gold? You even mentioned that somebody begged you to take it from them. What makes you think that it's worth a grand? You appear to be one of those that gets a part, doesn't see anybody else selling one, so it must be worth a mint. It's a $200 hood, pal!!!

Scottmoyer, I find your post ignorant. I asked for your advise in my origional post. That was your time to give me your input. You failed to do that so I came up with my own starting price. I have still not found another one with the functioning flaps! So yes it is worth more than a standard SMC non-functioning hood. Please do not refer to me as your "pal". I find that to be an insult.

Re: 82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
My post is ignorant? Why, because I answered your question when absolutely nobody else did and you don't like the price I gave? I didn't fail at anything since I never saw the original post until tonight. When 159 other people saw it and didn't respond, you should be thanking me for giving you an answer the first time I saw it. Calling you "pal" is insulting. To ME. I usually choose friends that don't try to rip other people off and they are willing to help others when they can. In four months, you've provided absolutely no help to anybody. You come here to try and rip people off and give an attitude. Welcome to TGO and don't expect much help from those that have been here for awhile. Also, good luck selling that gold plated hood!!

Re: 82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
unfortunately its really not worth a grand, 2-300 at the most. its one of those items that people have other options for if its a crazy price. you see someone selling a hood for a grand and i immediately look the other direction because you can honestly buy another thirdgen for that with a hood. may not be the one you want but its useable. unless you find that one collector thats considerably desperate after years of seaching to find a mint hood like this then your in luck, otherwise theres no market for a hood for that much.

Re: 82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
That's the thing. A collector would not look at this hood. If you read the first post, he mentions that the hood needs some patching. A collector might pay a grand for an unused NOS hood with all the working components, but I wouldn't trust somebody else's patching ability on a hood known for separating anyway. My $200 estimate is high if you consider it's overall original condition.

I've got 4 Lu5 hoods. Most I've paid for an individual one was $75. It had working flaps and hadn't separated yet. I bought an 82 Z28 with working Crossfire for $500. An early 83 Z28 with the SMC hood for $500. They are out there, just need to keep looking and have cash on hand.

Thanx Tylercamaro & Too many for you constructive criticism. scotmoyer could learn a thing from you. I am not trying to rip anyone off. I came to this site because i found it to be filled with knowledgable camaro people. I asked for help and got none. So I came up with my own starting price. I started at $1000 or best offer. I never said the price was firm. You wont catch a fish if you dont put a line in the water.
scottmoyer, again you show your ignorance by saying "My $200 estimate is high if you consider it's overall original condition." You have no idea of its actual overall origional condition. BTW, the hood was never separated. Someone must of pissed in your wheaties recently. I politely request you refrane from replying to this post.

Re: 82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
scotts just saying they tend to seperate very easily, i get where hes coming from when he said it needs patching, i mustve looked over that part. too many also helped prove my point that they are out there, but not as much of a want on peoples list with as many hoods that can be had.

Re: 82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
Ain't gonna happen! You're throwing down negative comments towards me, so I will respond. I do know it's overall ORIGINAL condition. You told us! You said it needs patching. This tells me that the hood is not in original, unmolested, mint condition. I found a few ads for these last night for about $150 with the fully functional hood flaps. If you think that spraying primer on the hood will increase it's value over one that is still in original paint, you're wrong. So, I will again say that my $200 value is high based on the fact that you can find them for $150. Is there something about that that offends you?
Yes you are trying to rip people off. You state that you were begged to take it for free and now you are trying to profit $1000 by spraying primer on it. Where would you think the thing is even remotely close to $1000 in value? If you started the price at $500 and said I'm open to offers, then that's different, but $1k is a ridiculous starting point and aimed at trying to rip someone off! Ebay sellers are found selling parts for 2x and 3x their value just hoping to grab the profit from an unknowledgeable buyer. People are always complaining about these price gouging sellers making it hard to fix their cars with OEM or NOS parts. There are original unused taillights on ebay right now for $1k. They have been there forever, because the seller is ridiculous in thinking that they will sell for that. There may be a very rich person that has money to spend and doesn't care about cost, but 99.9% of us, do care.
Put your hood on eBay and watch how many people comment how ridiculous your price is. Then you can whine about them instead of me!

Re: 82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
Please stop scotmoyer. Please back up your claim of finding multiple functioning hoods by providing links! Bet you cant. You A$$-U-me I got the hood for free. I never stated I recieved the hood for free. About 10 yrs ago I was purchasing a fiberglass 1995 Z24 hood off a gentleman and he begged me to take the Z28 hood off his hands. By no means does that mean I got it for free!
To infer that my restoration of the hood was a simple coat of primer is yet another assumption based in ignorance.
FYI: the definition of ignorance is the condition of being uninformed.
It is best to ask questions prior to making erroneous statements.
FYI: erroneous mean false :-)
And again I politely request you refrane from replying to this post, unless of course you are providing links for the multiple ads you found with functioning scoops.

Here's a link from just last year.
http://www.classracer.com/classforum...ad.php?t=27846
And then there was this one. It looks very familiar. The second link is your post on the TGO Classifieds. So, it's the only one out there at a ridiculous price.

Re: 82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
I checked out "Go to www.car-part.com. Select 1982 Camaro hood and you will find them with the working hood scoops from $60 - $200."
Made 5 calls to see if infact they have functional flaps. Not one had them.
FYI:
1982 Z28 came with the LG4 4bbl V-8 as standard motor and LU5 twin TBI `Cross Fire Injection' 5.0 liter/305 motor was optional. All Z28's came with lightweight SMC (Sheet Molded Compound) hoods. The LU5 optioned Z28's also came with functional hood air induction flaps.
1983 All Z28 hoods were switched from SMC to steel except the LU5 air induction hood. Last year for this functional induction hood, only available on the Z28, which featured opening flaps for a ram air-like effect.
Most of these hoods were recalled due to the separation issues, which was corrected in late 83. In addition I believe there was a recall due to water getting thru the flaps and shorting the injectors. Those hoods were sealed shut.
There are many SMC hoods to be had, but a true functioning hood is rare. I still have not found another for sale to date.
scotmoyer, you supplied me with 1 listing from over a year ago to support your claim. Where are the few adds you found last night? Shouldnt be hard to do, just check your history and get back to me.

Re: 82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
scotts right actually ive been on the borad for maybe a year or so. idr and ive seen them pop up multiple times for at most 200 bucks, and that one was painted beautiully no dents and brand spanking new.
im pretty sure most of us know the history behind them and thats not really the point. you want a baseline price. weve mentioned a few times that a decent price is anywhere from 75-200 bucks.
scotts the kinda guy that tells it how it is, he sweetens it by no means in some cases. to the thirdgen community hes a wealth of knowledge and all around good guy. i know in many threads ive seen him post good points all the time. i think that this thread has gone way overboard when the ignorance statements were brought up. the way this situation was handled was poor yes, but this fight between the two of you dont seem to show a conclusion to it at all.
i think alot of the older members on here get peeved when some newer member asks how much is this worth, where can i find this, etc. it happens alot, and most of the time they are reaallllly stupid comments or qestions. this brings me to the point about providing evidence. your on a computer theres an abundance of info here for you to use. go to the tp left corner theres a search button hit that a few times usign different key words and youll be amazed what youll come up with. ive found threads dating back to 01 or so that answered my questions completely.
i can agree that there may be none of these hoods on the market at the moment, but as ive seen and so have others these hoods do pop up from time to time. and they really dont go for that much because people arent looking for these, most users and thirdgen owners had a big ol engine in their car so they want a plain rs hood to cut up to fit stuff under or someone just wants a louvered z28 hood. thats not even taking into account how much aftermarket there is for these cars. i believe scott was part of the dashpad debate a few weeks ago so he knows what im saying when a mojority of member wont pay hoards of cash towards an object that there are ways of spending much less. solution if you cant find a good dashpad wait it out. if you cant find the hood you want for a decent price and need to drive your car, then find a different one for cheap as you search around more.
and please excuse all the typos

Re: 82 Z28 hood RPO LU5 SMC hood
All I can say is Tony has no clue. He asked for proof when I said I found multiple posts/links that advertised price. I gave him the links. Did I call and verify that they were in stock, no. I said I found links and he didn't believe me. I showed one link with half a dozen hoods listed!!! You hearing me, Tony?
Also, wherever you got that information regarding the SMC hoods is incorrect. The 1983 LG4 cars had the SMC hood also until the latter half of production. You want proof of that too? I had one. I had a 1983 Z28 that I bought in 1985 with 19k miles on it. It was an LG4 with 5 speed. The hood shattered when the car was totaled. I'm also fully aware of the hood for the LU5 cars. I had one of those also. It was an 82 Z28. The car was in the shop more than it was on the road. I experienced the "cease-fire injection" issue of the CFI engine. I also have an 82 Pace Car with the standard SMC hood for the LG4. I think I've experienced all options with this hood!
I have nothing to prove on TGO. I think my reputation here speaks for itself. Tony, maybe you should try having a reputation before trying to make others look bad. You didn't succeed in doing it to me. Good luck selling your "'patched' but worth a $1000" hood. And Tony, don't give me an FYI statement with incorrect info. Do some more homework next time. It really doesn't make you look very good.
BTW, Tyler, here's the conclusion to this? .....The hood is worth $150-$200! I said that earlier and showed links to prove it's value. What more can I do?

Hell I have one of those hoods just sitting around. I'd consider it a great celebration if I could get $200 for it. IIRC I posted it here years ago in the classifieds for about that and it never sold.

These things are super neat, but they really do need the right buyer to appreciate them. All the hot rod guys wanting to cut weight go to fiberglass cowls, and all the rest want IROC hoods. I love mine because it fits like factory and it's lightweight and I dont like cowls. I think it's a great find, it just suits me.
