How to Prep and Paint Engine Bay??

Guys,

Could use a little help on how to do it. My plan is to take some 120 grit sand paper to it to scuff it up, wipe it down with paint thinner, put a few coats of primer on it, put 2 or three base coats on, and then clear it.

Do i need to sand it at all between the primer/base/clear? What do you guys do?

Thanks!

sounds like a ton of work or the engine bay..unless it's a show car. I'd do it to the drips you create or any really rough spots...you can always just try it on one wheel well and if you like it do it to the rest.

Honestly I cheated. I bought some rough scuffy pads, scuffied it all down, wiped it down with some DX320 then Rattle canned it with some semi-gloss black rust oleum. But no, do not sand between Color and clear. As for primer, let it dry, Guide coat it and wet sand with 400 grit. let dry, blow it off, go over it with a dry paper towel to get rid of left over residue then wipe with some sort of cleaner, I personally use PPG DX320. base, tack rag, clear. If you want to take that route.

How'd it turn out? I'm looking to upgrade engines in about 2 yrsish...after i buy a house with a shop... and would either a be doing A good chunk of body work or B finding another body thats solid.

My rattle can job? Quite well actually, my only issue is that I got a few runs. I forgot how rustoleum tends to come out of the can so heavy. Honestly most people cant even tell I just spray bombed it. theres a pic in my gallery if you want to see.

It depends how good you want it. Want it to be flawless like the rest of the car? Then yes do all the steps possible to make it good. If you want a black engine bay meaning a non matching exterior color then life gets very easy since alot of the rust stuff like POR or Chassis saver comes in a good glossy finish that if done right can look very good.

Re: How to Prep and Paint Engine Bay??

I think I'm going to paint mine. I'm just going to sand the rough spots and use some high temp engine paint
