Is this paint quote a fair price or am I getting ripped??
Ok guys I've got a 1992 Z28 w/ Heritage stripes, Its red with black stripes.. Anyways the cars got the orginal paint on it, A dent in the front fender (not bad) a ding here and there and on the roof. I have the car stripped (weatherstripping door handles ect) and I'm wanting to paint the door jambs, engine bay, and exterior. I got a quote of $3500 to strip it, block it, and paint it. He's using a Dupont base coat/clear coat. He's stated it'll be like a shoe car finish, perfect and straight. Is this high? It seems like all body shops in the Oklahoma area just want to do insurance work. HElP!

Yeah, That's what I am finding too. A good paint job will run you $3000 to $5000, especially a show quality job. If you do your own prep work and take it to Macco your looking at $1000 for their good paint.

That price actually seems very reasonable to me. Just to strip, fix dents, prime and block out a car could easily cost $3k. If he's going to paint, wet sand and buff the car too I think that's a pretty good deal.

Sounds reasonable to me as well. You've got to consider the time involved - 1 dent and stripping, priming, prepping can be well over 60 hours of labor, and at $60 an hour, that's already $3600 just in prep time! My car had one clean easy-to-fix dent, and I had them paint a new nose cone - my labor was well over 70 hours, and I did alot of prep myself (sanding).
$60 an hour is considered really CHEAP labor these days! Hell, your local Chevy dealer gets $100+ an hour labor now for service. Places like Meineke franchises generally get $75+ an hour labor for service.
You also have to consider - it takes time for light removal, bumper removal, taping and masking, mixing colors, etc. Also, it's not usually a simple matter of just dumping paint into a bottle and spraying it - it has to be tested, and retested, again and again until the right consistency of paint to reducer/catalyst is acheived - that's an hour alone just testing. So if your getting undented, primered, prepped, sprayed, paint price included - all for $3500 quote, jump on it!

the question is... what do you think the job is worth? how many man hours of labor do you want them to spend on it?
The only was to get an inexpensive paint job (that you don't spray yourself) is to do all of the prep yourself, and take the car to them in a ready to spray condition. Then, like has been said, you can get a pretty good paint job for $1000 to $1500
learn to spray yourself, and that price drops considerably

Ok I grew up helping my dad in the body shop. That's a very reasonable price. Paint and materials has gone through the roof.
We did a 90 Mustang GT that was black, and we put Cervinis ground effects on it.That job ran $4500.00
It's straight as an arrow though. Paint's one of those things that just cost money,it's hard work too.

Re: Is this paint quote a fair price or am I getting ripped??
This paint job cost me $2000. I had already done the body work needed (wasn't hardly any) and he stripped it of the single stage it had. He sprayed it with multiple layers of bc/cc 74u Victory Red, and sanded the crap out of it. Mirror finish.
I took some of the pain out of the price by doing what I could like removing all the ground effects and lights and made it as easy for him as possible.

I'm thinking it is resonable now. Talked to a few people and he's the one I'm going with. I stopped by his shop and he's showed me custom paint jobs he did as well as airbrushing. I must have stayed over there 3 Hours just shooting the $hit. Great guy. Even invited me to help work on the car and he'd knock more off. I'm up for learning so hell. Win win. It obvious he has nothing to hide. He's already picked the color. Flame Red. I guess thats as bright as you can go before its orange looking? I don't know. Great guy though.

Reason I know 74U is Dark Red Metallic is because that's the code for my car!! ;-)

$3500 is a good price. Not many paint/body guys will let you into their shop to help out. I would jump on it in your situation. I have a friend who owns a body shop/paint dist. shop and he lets me help, but most people dont get that opportunity. You may be lucky (Like I am.) and make a life-long friend out of it!

Yea seems like a great guy. I'm getting it over to him in the next few weeks. I'm stripping it first.
