How does unpainted fiberglass look?
Hello I want to buy this http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HRD-B-12104/?rtype=10. But I don't want to deal with the trouble of painting it. Does it look like carbon fiber a bit or do i need to paint it?

Re: How does unpainted fiberglass look?
no, only carbon fiber looks like carbon fiber.
fiberglass hoods are generally gel coated, which is a black finish, satin color. it may not be a totally even color, but you can leave it unpainted if you want to. painted would look better IMO

Sometimes they are white too. I have a kit car that is white. Bare raw fiberglass parts are a golden tan color.

^Don't think you needed to come in here to give your opinion. He didn't ask for it.
As far as the OP, I would just paint it with at least rattle cans.

Re: How does unpainted fiberglass look?
Might wanna talk to the paint shop first & compare the price between painting straight from the manufacturer vs stripping the rattle can paint, then painting it.
I dunno how what it takes for a shop to strip rattle can, then paint it, but that could increase paint cost more than usual.

yeah, if you are going to ahve it painted at a shop at some point, forget a rattle can paint job, that will cost you money when it come time for the shop to prep your hood, since they will not paint over rattle can paint.

FWIW Those parts usually need some work to make them flat and not look wavy.
I use a 2k filler primer and block sand them to get as much of the waves out.
It depends how fussy you are, there are a lot of crappy looking fiberglass hoods on cars around here...

Re: How does unpainted fiberglass look?
First, that is one of the ugliest hoods you can buy for these cars. Second, the black gel coat will not hold up to the elements, it'll fade over time and just look like crap. Spend the money now to have it painted properly. The Harwood cowl I bought several years ago really wasn't too bad in being wavy but I did end up blocking it out. One more thing, you will need to trim the lip around the hood to match what your stock one is like. That lip is left there for shipping.

My comment was more tongue-in-cheek, but I'm not surprised.
Let the body shop paint it.
Unpainted fiberglass = looks like crap
Unpainted carbon fiber = looks like crap
Rattlecanned aftermarket hood = looks like crap

but hey, that hood, some rear window louvers, solid centerline wheels and some pastel stripes down the side of the car, it'll be mid-80's style correct

Re: How does unpainted fiberglass look?
Still wouldn't be right. You'll need side pipes, rear wheels that stick out 4 inches and air shocks in the back to complete the look.
