Tires making me hate my car????
Ok, I bought a black 92 RS a few months ago and the guy had just put 235/60R16's on the stock rims. Well the car was waaaaayyyy to high for my taste and just looked goofy from some angles. I decided to cut 1 coil off the rear springs to bring the back end of the car down a bit and it still looks retarded. The whole car just seems to sit about 9 inches off the ground. Something just looks wrong with the car. The tires look like they belong on a truck. I was just wondering if all my problems could be stemming from the huge tires. Also, after cutting the rear springs it seemed to lift the front end of the car. What do you guys think? Let me know some opinions.

Re: Tires making me hate my car????
well if you cut the rear springs and not the front the front will kind of raise up. I wouldnt think it'd look that bad. I had 235/60/15's on mine and the tires are only 26 inches tall. get some eibach lowering springs

after seeing intimidator. I didnt see his post until after I posted mine. I think you need to change the tires to get the look you want. Too much sidewall.

Hey IntimidatorZ, what size tires did you change to? 245/50R16?

Re: Tires making me hate my car????
Just an FYI that 235/60-16 is a 27.1 inch tire where the 245/50-16 is 25.6 inches. Whoever put the 235s on the car created the higher look. I don't think I would've cut the springs as replacing the tires to the correct size makes more sense.

Re: Tires making me hate my car????
hi, the original size on yur car is 235/55/16. older models size is a much better fit and look at 245/50/16. the 235/60/16 on yur car now are for a touring car like an olds aurora, cadillac, etc...they were probably put on there because they are much cheaper. going to any of the original sizes will drop the tire height down a full inch. been doing tires for 11 years so i'm familiar with all this. hope it helps you out.

Re: Tires making me hate my car????
You may think so, I use to think so also, ran those kind for years, till I bought a new set of tires my first time, now I know why they got new ones when they still looked "good" cause they arent, only by eye does it look that way but compared to new, they suck.
If I was richer I buy new tires every year.

Re: Tires making me hate my car????
It is just amazing how bad the whole car looks with these big-*** tires! All the 3rd gens I've ever seen sit high in stock trim anyway but with bigger tires they look like hatchback suv's! I definitely need the low, badass look. Looks like the tires may be the first step to that. I'll change them before I cut anymore off the springs. I'll trim some more once I have some new tires. Now I just need to decide between 225/50 or 245/50. Decisions, decisions.

I have 245/40/18 all the way around. It sat pretty well even maybe the rear was a pinch lower. Then I put hotchkis 2" lowering springs on the front and I can't get enough of how much better it made my car look.

Re: Tires making me hate my car????
The 225 series is a narrower tire than the 245. If you maintain the 50 aspect ratio, the 225 will be a much smaller tire. The 50 is the percentage the sidewall is to the width of the tire. The 225 is 8.8 inches wide where the 245 is 9.6 inches wide. The 50 is then 4.4 inches of sidewall where the 245 is 4.8 inches of sidewall. The current tire on the car has a 5.5" sidewall. If you are looking to make the car look correct, You should stick with the 245-50 as that is what it was designed for. The 225 series will leave the wheel opening looking quite bare and open. Once you get the tires on, then decide on lowering options to get the car to sit exactly how you want it.

Re: Tires making me hate my car????
^^^^ Yup! I agree ^^^^ I went with 245/50/16's on the front and 255/50/16's on the rear of my Semi-daily driver. I think the combo looks best. Dont go cheap on the tires. If you have to, buy a pair at a time. When I bought my IROC it had 225/50/16's all the way around and looked like a clown car because of it. I think the previous owner was just trying to save money. Tires make a big difference in the way a car handles. I would also recommend you not cut coils to lower the car. My IROC is lowered on Eibach Pro-kit springs and KYB AGX adjustable shocks and struts. The ride is a little rough, but it corners like it's on rails with almost no body roll. I use BF goodrich G-force T/A's which are a little expensive, but well worth the money in my opinion. Kumho makes a good tire in 245/50/16 size that isnt too bad for the money.

I guess I'll add, since no one has said anything, changing tire sizes affects the speedo as well.

245/50 is a little short. 235/55 is closest at about 26.1 inches. Not as common though.

Re: Tires making me hate my car????
I tell ya, I am the type of person that picks out one thing that bothers them about a car and either fixes it or it makes me hate the car. Before this car I had a 98 Dodge Neon R/T which I highly modified over a span of about 10 years. It can whoop most cars with 3 times the engine(just thought I'd add that ). Anyway, lowering it was easier because of the bodykit options available. 3rd gens are more difficult because of the lack of tastefull aftermarket sideskirts to complement the overall lowering of the car. What I'm getting at is, something as little as too tall a tire shows up a lot more on this car than others and also the fenderwells just don't look right unless the tires are tucked. Sorry, just ranting I guess. Please keep the pictures and responses coming. Thanks.

Re: Tires making me hate my car????
I do know I went from 205/65/15 front and 235/75/15 rear to 245/40/18 all the way around. It has made the rear drop a little, lowering my speed at 2k rpms which is why I went with such a big rear tire. Although it was big I did not have plans on lowering it at the time. With a 95 camaro V6 T5 and 3.23 rear gears I was driving at 55 mph at 2k. Switched to the new 245/40/18 and was driving 55mph at 2500 rpms. I also blew third gear out of it racing my cousins vr6. Anyways, got the proper T5 from an 88 V8 camaro so now I drive 60mph at 2k rpms. At full turn the front tires rub and I have a 5/16 inch spacer on each rim. The wheel gap with the old front tires was bad, but the back tire was sucked. Now I plan on lowering it all the way around. I did have new tires put on with the 205/65/15 and 235/75/15 and the difference between the new and old was night and day. There is always something new to learn.

I run 255/50/16 BF Goodrich all around with Eibach sportline(2" lower 650lb/in) and Koni Red set on road and track. I love the firm ride, this car corners like nothing else I've ever driven. The tires aren't rediculous in price and the look is brutal. Check it out in my profile. Someday, finances permitting, I may step up to 17" IROCs with 275/40/17 tires. That's the best tire I've heard of for these cars.

I honestly like the stock rims, with stock tires and a stock ride height the best. Lowered cars look bad to me, which isn't surprising because I don't like anything lowered. Including trucks.

I'm not playing around this year. Putting some NT05s up front, and NT05Rs in back.
What good is 400+ if you can't put it down. (Prays for that much at the crank on the new engine). I can light the cheapo Kuhmo's up on my car all day long.
