fuel door question

Is there any way to make the factory fuel door close better? I have a hood pin rigged to my fuel door that's tied to a piezo siren ( tank got siphoned a few times) my only issue with it is my door doesn't close hard enough to keep the pin open, it works stationary but if I hit a bump while driving it will push open juuuuust enough to ground the switch which causes the siren to go off when I arm the switch

I've got the pin as close to the hinge as possible because that's where the strongest point is for the pin, and I'm also using the softest pin we have available at work, the door never sat closed properly anyway and all the screws are there so I'm slightly puzzled, I even tried adjusting it with no luck.... if I could order a new one that would be stronger id like to know

I was also contemplating using one of the aftermarket metal ones I could bolt to the body, problem is I don't like chrome, and I also don't know the size of the fuel door, I could paint it if that's my best option but like I said I'm not sure on what would fit

Does anyone have an aftermarket fuel door on their thirdgen? I'm installing a clifford 2 way remote start/alarm next week and id like to use this pin on one of the extra channels because I'm sick of my fuel tank being open to the public lol

Any ideas????

TIA

Re: fuel door question

The only thing I can think of is get a door from a u-pull-it place that has a good spring & use the spring-- if thats possible. I've never taken 1 apart.

Some thirdgens were equipped with a locking fuel door that might be the ticket. Or perhaps you could install a locking cap?

Re: fuel door question

I would have to look at it to see if its doable(car is not here) but you could possibly get a cam type lock and mount that to the fuel door. And its a bit extreme but you could reroute the filler tube to behind one of the lights(he put the light on a hinged motor), I know at least one person did that for the cool factor, but if it were me I would probably get one of those theft deterrent systems that zaps a would be perp with some juice.(Idk that those are legal though in the US though..)

If a locking cap won't do the trick, I doubt that a locking door would be of any benefit either. A search might find more info on the latter, should you be interested.

I think it would be stronger, but honestly, if people seriously puncture gas tanks in his area just to get at gas, I don't think anything short of an armored gas tank and motorized fuel and shaved fuel door will do the trick, could always try leaving very little gas in it too, maybe they would learn it wasn't worth the trouble, lol.

Invest in a motion detecting flood light and a gun.

Re: fuel door question

Maybe get a vicious dog and chain it within reach of your car...hell even seemingly non vicious dogs can get rather territorial, or at least be somewhat intimidating/deterring, especially if they think someone is up to no good. It won't help if you're not home, but hey its an idea! If it were me, I pretty much guarantee I would just move my dog within reach, lol, she might be a fluffy and girly looking dog, but she has a mean streak, attacked a rottweiler once....he ran off with his tail between his legs when I managed to pull her back.
So if you have a dog, try that.

I would assume any pontiac/chevy/buick/ols from the 80s would work. I know my mom's 85 6000LE Pontiac looked to have the same fuel door style and it was locking. I had a locking cap, but it was a combination lock and not a key lock. It would free spin unless you had the right combo in place.

I know we have snagged the early firebird/TA PMD style seats from grand ams, grand prixs, and 6000LEs. The only changes were the seat rails and hinges. Also the side mirror guts were swappable from F-bodys to fieros. So it would be reasonable to assume something like a fuel door would be pretty universal. GM liked sharing alot of parts. Go to a junkyard like pull-a-part and take apart an f-body fuel door and compare it to a locking one at a yard. The locks usually just pull out in the back with a clip, so getting it rekeyed or swapping to a new lock with key would be easy, esp if the junkyard tumbler was ruined.

I'm not sure how well the fit translates over, but they make some nice metal ones for the edge mustangs. My girls is a 03. Darn thing closes tight. Its anodized black. The ring has two locater studs on the ring and two that pinch the sheet metal w/in the fuel door recess. Will have to measure to see if sizing is the same. The have a plain version.
