What should i do?

Today on my drive back home some guy in front of me slammed on his brakes and then I slammed on mine and was able to keep from hitting him. Then two other knuckle heads with cars that are only 2 years old arent able to stop and run into the back of me which that itself is pretty wierd considering my car is 23 years old and I was able to stop. Luckily the only thing that happened is that my back bumper got some pretty good paint scrapes. Do you think I should try to go to the guys's insurance and say I need a new bumper and paint job and say just pay how much it would cost to repaint? Or what would you do because with the money they give me I want to repaint the car.

Re: What should i do?

Insurance companies dont pay YOU, they pay the shop thats doing the work. And it all depends on what the insurance agent says. If its the person who hit you insurance covering it, they will send an agent to inspect your car and they will work with the shop on how much its gonna cost.

Re: What should i do?

I've had insurance companies send me checks before when I was hit. If your car is still drivable they will send an adjuster to look at it, decide what it will cost to fix it, and then send you a check. I got a $600 check a few years ago because some girl hit me at a stop sign. I got a 3" scratch on the rear bumper of my truck and her car had to be towed away with a harpooned radiator....gotta love receiver hitches.

Re: What should i do?

Ive never seen anyone get the check themselves. My buddy works at a body shop his uncle owns and they always get paid from the insurance companies directly.

Re: What should i do?

Yes you can, I know for a fact , in the state of texas you can fix it yourself, saving you money and putting it in your pocket. Alot of people don't know that but it is possible.

Re: What should i do?

Yeah because I had a friend who got backed into by a truck with a trailer hitch. It left a small square on the front bumper and they got 750 for it. They own a Mustang. I was thinking since mine is a Camaro that I might get more money because finding third gen camaro parts is harder than any other old car.

Re: What should i do?

I live in MN so this may not apply to your state but this happened to me last winter. I have heard from many people that when you are in an accident the check is sent directly to the body shop where you get the quote and service done meaning you never see the check and their is no money exchange with you. But last winter I was run into at a stop light (not my fault or insurance company), his insurance agent called me the next day and told me to get a quote and get a copy of the quote to him and the check was sent directly to me. Now from what I gather, if it is not your fault meaning YOUR insurance company is not paying the bill they will send the check directly to you BUT if it is your fault and YOUR insurance company is paying the bill they send the check directly to the body shop so they know the damage is getting fixed. The only reason I can think that this is the way it is, is since the car is kind of their responsibility they want to make sure the work is done so there is no future problems that may cause another accident or claim but if it is somebody else's insurance company they basically pay you and they are done worrying about your car. I don't know if this is true in any other state but it seems to be the case in MN, so my advice would be to get a quote from the most expensive body shop in your town and (since you were run into from the rear I would assume this is not your fault) send the quote to their insurance company and hopefully you will get the check sent right to you. By the way for my 2001 Grand Prix the body shop figured a new bumper cover, absorber and paint and the total came to $955.

On another note I still haven't got it fixed and this is paying for half of my 3rd gen I am picking up this weekend.

I would just do what they tell you to and worst case scenario you will get new paint on your bumper cover and probably a new cover as body shops seem to rather replace than repair.

Re: What should i do?

What about that pain in your Neck???
But seriously
I too received the check after an older gentleman slammed into my parked car. The bad part is if the shop comes up with more damage then their original estimate you might be out of luck..

Of course it didn't matter to me because I fixed it myself.

Re: What should i do?

If the damage was only on your bumper, they're certainly not going to pay to have the whole car repainted. You do have the choice of who does the work, so if a friend is going to paint it, then ask for the cost of repairs (that a shop would charge to fix it) and apply that towards your new paint job.

Re: What should i do?

Tell the guy's insurance you need to have them come out and assess the damage. If you like what they say they will pay, take their money. If not, take it to a couple of shops and have them assess it, then counter with the insurance company.

I had moved my car from the parking spot across from my driveway so my mother in law would not back into it- worst freaking driver in the world. So the next day the neighbor backs in to it with his truck and crushes the damn door!! His insurance company sent me a check and I got a replacement door from the junk yard. I should have had it professionally done because the door is not quite right, fitment wise, the insurance paid me $800 and a body shop quoted me $1500 to fix the damage- AFTER I HAD ACCEPTED THE CHECK!!
