Re: DacMan's Body Work

Ok so I REALLY NEED HONEST OPINIONS!!!! I am contemplating painting my hood satin black, then painting the inserts were the louvers are supposed to go matte black. As you all know I cut out ports for a grill at the ends of the hood as depicted. I will insert my two grill peices in there (they will either be satin black or maybe chrome, although I doubt chrome) anyway I think that would look good as a hood, but here's were the conflict comes in. I have planned on cream hockey stick stripes from day one, do I do those with the radical hood or not? And if so do you all think maybe that will be a little much for a camaro, because I don't want to look like some distasteful little punk, but I also don't want to have the same camaro as everyone else. Anyway opinions PLEASE, be hash be brutal I don't care, just let me know.

Thanks DacMan

From someone who has been through all this a few times before, you are doing a damn fine job! Look where I ended up eventually with my camaro above!!

Keep us posted on your progress

Re: DacMan's Body Work

Andy I have seen your camaro a few times in other threads and have always thought it looked pretty good aside from the flames, and the berlinetta front end. Engine bay's a little red for me, but it's a lot better than mine. There's a pic of my engine bay, it looks way worse now then it did then, I ended up beating the crap out of it, with a 9 month ongoing trouble shoot lol.

Bit of a cold response don't you think?

Don't worry about hurting anybody's feelings. So manners and subtelty have finally gone then?

In 1 year after a 15 year DIY build and loads of shows and charity events in the UK I have never received ANY negative responses like that. In fact the car has gone down superbly well.

And, yes, I can take criticism. But not like that.

Hope its made you feel better insulting other people's work. No doubt you can do better.

Thanks for making me feel upset and annoyed.

Hi Dacman.
You're doing a good job though.

My car was designed to be a head turner and a top show attraction. Not for the prizes, but to show off my work and actually cheer people up! The brighter the better. The flames were overhaulin' inspired. Not to everyones taste but I like 'em.
The concept was a humble, lowly sport coupe without gfx or anything fancy (apart from a V8) and turn it into something that this country had never seen. Yours probably, but not ours. The SC/berlinetta simple front end just added to the basics of the car.

Z28's and IROC's with skirts are abundant but a sport coupe? No.

To me, painting things black that have taken time and care to restore/smooth out etc is hiding all the care and love that has gone into it.

But, each to his own. Reading about your battles with time/college is all familiar stuff to all of us. Makes fascinating reading. And brings back memories and hopefully similar times to come.

Good luck with the car and college.

Andy.

Re: DacMan's Body Work

Thanks andy, I see your point about the uniqueness your car has, and never thought of it that way. And you're right to each his own, if everyone liked everything everyone else did to eachothers car, we'd all have the same car, and this hobby would be boring. Chip foose inspired flames is certainly somthing to be proud of!!! Even though I've seen all the reruns at this point, I still can't help but sit down and whatch the master work every time overhaulin' is on tv. Just out of curousity do you ever drive your sport coupe on the street, or is it mostly a trailer queen? Thanks for the encouragment, I hope to hear more from you in the future.

It wasn't mean as an insult, everyone has flawed opinions, mines just happends to be against flashy/chrome things. Besides the flames and wheels, your car is amazing. It is a masterpiece in every way but to me small things that don't match just takes away the final result.

Anyways, keep up the good work Dac, I look forward to seeing it all done.

Re: DacMan's Body Work

So today Dac took a trip to the junk yard, here's what I got: Rear electric hatch lift, switch, and lock core (for sale), T-top Headliner, Center Consol and shifter, Passenger side door molding (Isn't right for my car, would be happy to trade it to somone if they need it and have an 83 Z28 molding) Drivers and Passengers door covers, Spare tire, and Visors. Some pics are below. I Ended up dropping by napa and picking up some of their flat black vinyl and fabric paint, and as you'll see in the before and afters they turned out pretty well. I've never seen interior door covers like that, but they look good IMO.

Re: DacMan's Body Work

Suprisingly they don't it feels soft and natrual like they were died, it certainly did cover up those nasty stains, and even if it was new, I still would have wanted the top to be all black.

Thanks for the compliment, Dac

Hey dac, I think a nice shiny black hood would look good with your red car. Maybe do the hockey stripes the same black. I think that would look sweet.

Glad to hear it slowmaro, Good Idea mark, although that may be a little much for me, at this point I think I might just satin black the hood and forget the hockey stick stripes.

Re: DacMan's Body Work

Wow, Dac those door panels turned out great. What JY are you going to?? I can't find good parts around here for the life of me.

I did score a Z28 on craigslist the other day for $200, though. 350 TPI with T-tops, just need to change the nose cone and fenders and go through the interior a bit.

On another note, have you worked much with fiberglass? I have a whole set of 91-92 graphics but the nose cone has a little tear in it, and I'd like to fix it.

Re: DacMan's Body Work

I went to pick a part, really good stuff there, a running z28 350 for two hundred uhh PICS!!!!! I havn't worked with fiberglass much, and all I've learned from it is that is sucks big time to work with. I hate it. I have found that when laying a patch, using bondo hardner as an activator works much better than the hardner they give you with the resin, ans since both are compadible with eachother it doesn't really matter that the hardner is for bondo and not resin.

Re: DacMan's Body Work

Been better lol. I am at collage now so nothings happening to it. However in the last three weeks or so I got a few things done, most of the interior is back in, the hood is on, and I bought a edlebrock 500 cfm carb so I don't have to mess around with carbs anymore. However I never got the carb on, but that wasn't a problem because my maro ran ok with the unhooked computerized carb a friend gave me to borrow, until I went to move it after sitting a week, I have no clue what happened it ran great when parked then it ran so horribly when I went to start it the next time around. No horribly in a sense that it wasn't smoth, horribly in a sense that it hardly idled, and backfired out the intake and exhaust, I even warmed it up, and it still ran like ****. I don't know what it was all about, but all I did was move it from an indoor location to out and leave it for a week, under a car cover.
