Re: firebird body kit
Reason is that fiberglass and sheetmetal expand and contract at entirely different rates, cracks are inevitable... For everything to remain intact and not have the cracks and seam lines as Firebat mentioned the entire fender would have to be in metal,,but hey, no biggie! They could be built!
Too bad you live way out East, would be a fun fab project to help out on!

would it crack if you used fiberglass fenders and a fiberglass bumper. that would be a lot lighter then steel and probably easier to work with. you could probably take some extra fiberglass mat and resin and make the fenders and bumper one smooth piece.

Re: firebird body kit
There is no "body kit" on the Poly TA.
Just ASCD Ram Air I hood, holes cut for increase air flow inside (turbo intercooler?) & an added on piece to the font nose to help split the wind on high speed runs.

Re: firebird body kit
Man to be 18 again.
The negative of the body kits is usually the unfortunate added weight. I know when I put GTA panels (ground fx, bmumpers, fenders) on my '89 formula 10 years ago it gained a LOT of weight.
Then again, the fat pig 2nd gen I have right now is probably 300lbs heavier than the fattest thirdgen, so who am I to talk.

the weight of a body kit really shouldn't be that big of an issue. i would probably go all fiberglass so it shouldn't weigh that much more than it does now.the stock steel hood and fenders are a lot heavier than fiberglass ones. fiberglass body kit style bumper covers may add a bit of weight over the stock ones cuz there usually little bigger. so the over all weight of the car should stay close to stock.

Re: firebird body kit
Another option for a body kit is to make one. It doesn't sound like it would be too difficult to do. Just carve some foam to the desired shape and cover it with tinfoil then a lot of resin and some fiber glass mat then more resin and mat. Till you get it about a 1/4 inch thick. I’m sure it’s probably a lot harder than I made it sound but it would be fun to try and a lot cheaper than buying one of these other kits. I found two third gens that have had this done the first is made by tgo member diore from Finland there's a thread about it here.
she’s been designing a new front bumper
the other third gen I found with a custom body kit is a camaro at fiberglass forums there's 70 pages loaded with pics and info on how he built his rear bumper. but unless you sign up for that site that link probably won’t work for you so here's a few of the pics
this pic shows the foam he used to carve out the mold.
This second pic shows it with the first few layers of fiberglass.
The last pic is the bumper all finished and primed and that is a mustang roof and trunk I think 09. i preferred the notch back but it’s his car and he did do a good job blending the new roof to the car.

Re: firebird body kit
The first body kit listed I think is sick looking!!! I want one real bad, I want that along with the "super duty" hood from hawks third gen parts, which looks like a 4th gen camaro ss hood but it'll work for the third gen firebird! I want that hood, the Extreme Dimensions body kit with black mesh, 3 piece rear window louvers painted to match the car, and a set of Z06 wheel that are black with a chrome lip, then all the lights blacked out and I will be done! I dont care if it looks like ***** trash, I like the body kits and all the fast and the furious stuff! It's my car and I will make it look like what I want, if you dont like it than be happy its not yours! P.S. I do intend on doing the twin turbo kit, and this body kit would be perfect! Look at the firebirds and TA's now there is no open cooling like there are on the camaros.
Oh and that german body kit is by far the best I have ever seen! WOW is all I have to say, well that and where the heck can I get one???

Re: firebird body kit
I have a link to their website: http://www.otp-vondracek.de/ (seems to have gone under)
I just read this now, yeah they're out of business. They got a real bad rep, guy (Juroslav Vondracek) hiding behind his bed ridden 90 something year old mom or grandma (not sure) Hermine Vondracek in his business schemes. Never used them but heard comments about the quality, they were not favorable.
I know most of you don't read German, maybe use the Google Translater...see what it does but here's some dirt on them and a reason why they are no longer in business
http://www.otpvondracek.de/
1 more pic of that car for those who do like it (not me)

Re: firebird body kit
look at post 56 i sayed it was a camaro. but i didn't notice the fender hanging on the wall. the guy has yet to mention anything about his plans for the front end. and i gave it no thought.
he has since changed the bumper so it no longer curves upward so much. and it looks alot better.

Re: firebird body kit
harwood with you about how people just jump to conclusions about cars with body kits the don't take the time to actually see the beauty of these cars. they just asume there gona have fake glued on scoop and ridiculous paint jobs. but that doesn't always have to be the case. cars with body kits can be done rite and look amazing like your car. i love the bird on your hood. do you have any more pics of you car that have not already been posted.
another body kit that looks nice on our cars is the predator kit.
i think this kit can be bought at http://bageco.com/mckkits/mckkits_ponti.htm for 599 bucks the only thing i dont like abot this kit is the front is to rounded to match the car i think its a 91 or 92 bird

I love this forum, and look at it almost everyday for one question I have or another.
I don't post pictures of my car on here, because most "Camaro" people are diehards and not very understanding of what I am doing (like calling my car a tuner...lol)
none the less...someone else has posted pictures of my car, so I will post some more recent photos of it mostly complete.

IM not a big fan on the body kits but I like the wide body on camaro kit (I think it would look bad *** on my vert)
The orange camaro is different but its nice.
I think you should do a build thread on it here

is not easy taking a 20 somthing year old car and making it fit in with current times, keep up the great work and am sure to follow your progress on the other forum if you decided not to open your own here, i can imagine after 80 something pages on the other site you probably wont have the time to post all the work here too. keep up the good work!

Re: firebird body kit
The above mods look great and I definitely take my hat off to those doing the fabricating. The key questions I would ask are, what do you want to accomplish and second, the body lines should be enhanced.
Even that German kit leaves a little to be desired with the back wheelwell. I'm pretty old-school, but the idea of customizing was top look stock at first glance then to shock and amaze at second and third. I find many modern body kits to be too much over the top - jmo.

Re: firebird body kit
I really like the front end of Harwood's ride on the first page of this. Is that grille functional? Does it obsolete the air dam? I need a front grille to cool my dang radiator off. A lot of people use the word "rice". It's not a body kit that makes a car look rice, it's a horrible paint job and dragon decals. But everyone knows dragon decals add 25hp at least.

Wow the orange Camaro is awesome! I have a huge list of things I wanna do to my car, and will make it look very different and tuner like, but you know what, it's my car and I'm gonna make it look the way I like. If some one else complains or makes comments who cares its not theirs. If your happy and pleased with how the car looks and turns out then that's all that matters.

Re: firebird body kit
The front air dam just sits over top of the old bumper, not the plastic cover, but the actual steel part. So it isn't completely functional. If you were to take the steel portion off, it may be closer to functional, but I tour often with my 4 yr. old daughter, so safety was still a concern for myself and that little flimsy piece of fiberglass wouldn't serve well enough.
I imagine it does allow alot more air flow through than the original cover, but it may just be causing unnecessary drag. My 400 thats so well known for overheating never has, but there's alot of other factors in there, too.

I'm a member of fiberglass forums and I've been following your build almost since day 1. I didn't care for it much when you put the mustang hatch on it... Not because I'm a purist, I just didn't care for the look when I saw the primer pics. But after you got it in paint it totally changed my mind and came out awesome looking. I just wish you'd have done something with the front end. The rear is now custom and curvy, but the front is still old school angular.

Anyhow, latest pics look nice. really nice. Clean. I like it. I might have spaced the tail lamps a little differently, but overall I think the lines look good.

Re: firebird body kit
The purple one reminds me of what people used to do to vettes. (See, also "Corvette Summer"). I like the white/red nose, but think it SCREAMS for either autobot or decepticon badges. The flared wheel wells look okay.. but I shudder to think what series tires needs them.. even my 255/50's fit fine, and I could probably go wider and still not clear the well.
I think the difference, IMHO, between "rice" and "non rice" is the goofy chicken wire. Avoid that, (or at the very least, paint it) and you will lose a lot of that criticism.
Course, I think they look just fine the way they rolled off the line, for the most part, though I've never been a huge fan of the 91 noses. To me, they belong on a Superbird.

Re: firebird body kit
another thing i was wondering about is if any one has squared off the corners of a 4th gen wing. i like how the look on third gens but there just a little to round the match the look of our cars. i was thinking it would look awesome if someone pulled the corners out to square it up a bit. also maybe put a 1 inch rise on the back just thinking
I actually was thinking about doing that same thing. I can do the fiberglassing but need to get a spoiler to practice on before I make a mess of one that I would want to use. (Trial and error) I know the aftermarket ones are fiberglass so that would be the choice to do the finished work on.
What I had in mind was to square off the corners and straighten out the back edge some. Make the 4th gen spoiler blend in with the styling of a 3rd gen a little more. It would be a subtle change but I think well worth the time involved.
I have talked to body men here and friends and all agree it can be done and different ways to do it so that it lasts and looks original for the spoiler as well as right on the car.
I would love to have a wide body kit on my Firebird but haven't decided on how I would want it made and not sure if I could make one myself.

I might be interested in donating mine (to be returned) for practice work. Mine is a LS1 wing, so it doesn't sit as flat as LT1 wings, so I wanna replace it anyways, unless the feet could be leveled out.
PM me if your interested in working something out, for a practice piece.

After all, it's not like Invented the blindspot, or that this is the first Camaro with a blind spot
Good thing I didn't go with a Honda based theme versus the 70 camaro theme Otherwise you would have been really stumped.

It is from this Kobel Predator Ground Effect Kit.
It is made by ABS plastics and comprising of three pieces.
If you have those pieces for sale I`m interested.
