Rotting fenders and filler?

I have an 89 firebird formula. We all know how they rot. Someone mentioned to me when i get body work and painting redone that some people choose to fill the back bumpers and fenders in on the inside so water can't sit up behind there. Has anyone ever tried it?

You mean the urethane bumpers rotting? I've never heard of this. My 1985 bumpers are fine. I seriously doubt water gets trapped behind the anyway, due to the whole gravity thing going on.

its the rear wheel wells? there's a lip...the wells come down and curve..so water sits on that lip inside. Ive been told to put filler in there so water runs out

Re: Rotting fenders and filler?

I just looked at the rear wheel wells on my Camaro and don't see any lip that traps water. Maybe we are talking about something different.
Either way, if you do have an area that traps water you can do whatever. Bend the lip, drill a drain hole, or fill it in. Take it for a drive on a rainy day and then let it sit for a bit. If water collects that's not good. Make sure you treat any rust with a good paint before using body filler.
