Re: Hatch is leaking (HELP)

theres a gasket that runs around the entire hatch opening. if its ripped/worn it can leak.

Re: Hatch is leaking (HELP)

found this answer for you;
The seal between the window and the hatch is worn. Any glass shop will reseal this.to do yourself buy a glass sealer or tar. remove inner hatch cover, there are I believe 4 bolts holding the window to the hatch. remove them. Have a large 4by4 holding up the hatch. Remove the hatch struts. Clean off old sealer under window an hatch. Reseal the hatch/window. Put the struts back and retighten all the bolts snug not too tight.

Plus the pull down motor doesn't work. Its unplugged right now, but the thing will never seal it up right anyhow so it just keeps running and running and running and I don't want it to drain the battery...

Are you sure you got the correct length of struts? If it latched fine before that then I think the struts are probably a little shorter.

Thats what I've been told before, but I don't have the old struts to compare anymore, and I'll have to find somewhere to get them for cheap, $50 is what I paid for them last time.

And theres still the problem of the electric pull down...I've always had to slam mine.

x3
Mine was leaking from this exact spot, I always thought it was the weatherstripping leaking, but finally one day I took the plastic trim piece inside the car off, and watched the drip of water come right from those bolts.

You say the motor is always running? Check the switch on the motor, sounds like the switch might be broke and the motor doesn't know it's all the way up (or down).

I'm going to get it taken apart sometime this week and maybe take it out and service it, if I can't figure anything out then I'll take pics and post them here I guess...

I just found out that all 1990's weren't slam shut hatches and well I've always had to slam mine so I probably broke the motor or something.

Re: Hatch is leaking (HELP)

Sealing the problem from the inside of the hatch is not the answer. The water will still sit between the glass and the hatch. even if you keep it from entering the car it is still causing a problem. It will rot the hatch over time.

Re: Hatch is leaking (HELP)

Mine was leaking between the 2 steel sections w/ the glass sandwiched in between too. The factory sealing job was very poor. I got lucky in that there was only surface rust on the underside panel. I took it all apart and had that part powdercoated so it won't rust in the future. Definitely something to tackle right now.

This is where it leaks, past this window adhesive/sealant

The large black panel on the right is the piece from the underside

My solution will be to go apesh!t with the sealer on the back of the glass, sealing around the bolts too. Really don't want to do this again, prying the rear panel off the glass can be a real PITA.

Re: Hatch is leaking (HELP)

The only reason it leaks is because the struts or whatever dont alloy it to seal correctly, it sounds like the doors open when you listen to the trunk, and it only leaks a few drops on the corners, well the passenger side corner because thats the worse of the two sides.

When I take it to the car wash, I have to be careful when I spray the tali lights and the hatch because I will shoot water into the trunk, under the hatch, above the weather stripping.

Its not leaking or rusting, I've had mine taken apart and I've seen the underside of the hatch with the plastic piece removed and its not getting wet, or rusting at all, the problem is completely caused by the struts or pull down motor not functioning properly. Not something else.

I've looking into it many times, I tore the hatch apart in the summer.

Motor keeps running and running = broken gear nut.
