Lift off hood conversion to stock hinges and struts??

Okay guys I'm in a bit of a delimma. I've also looked on here and cannot find anyone that has done something about this. I have a fiberglass lift off hood with big scoop, and it was originally for the use of hood pins around the perimeter of it. Well I really want to go back to the hinges and struts. This is not a bolt on so i have no idea how i should go about trying to attach struts, hinges, and latch. Any ideas? I could really use the help, have been trying to figure this on out for awhile now. Thanks guys

I used hinges and struts on a bolt-on fiberglass hood... bad news. It worked but it was a pain in the butt to open and close and would twist unless it was opened perfectly level.

I imagine you need to add support bars to the underside of the hood, almost like a giant square.

Your problem is probably the struts. The steel hooded struts are typically too strong for fiberglass hoods. Either find some struts for the 82-84 OEM 'glass hoods or pull the struts off & while it still may twist a little, it won't be nearly bad. You'll hafta come up with a prop rod though, to keep it open.

As for the OP....
Just get a set of stock hinges & struts & bolt them on. If it is a stock bodied car, the holes for the hinges are still there & you can bolt the hinges right up. You'll probably want a latch & pop spring front the front too.

Maybe get a stock hood from the junkyard and steal all the hardware. It will also help you with where to drill the holes etc. Also maybe find some weaker stuts that wont hold a stock hood open (like my struts). They may be just right for your glass hood.

It's been awhile since I had a lift off hood, but as I remember, there aren't any mounting points underneath for stock hinges. It's basically flat underneath, so just bolting up stock hinges wouldn't work, that's why you need to use pins or dzus fasteners. Here's an ebay link to a Harwood hood that shows what I mean:

A way around that could be to make a metal plate to go between the hood and the hinges for bracing and use dzus fasteners (or something similar) through the hood to bolt the hood to the hinges, take off the strut and run a prop rod. You would see the fasteners but it should work, just run pins up front as there probably isn't a latch on the hood.
