Is your car red?? Then come on in.....

Hey guys I am running into a small problem. I am going to be ready for paint and body work pretty soon here and am running into an issue. I am going to paint the car red, at least the factory red that I see on most camaros and firebirds and vettes running around. I have done some searches on here and came across a couple different factory colors that seem to contradict a little. First is a color called torch red. Not sure what the RPO/color code is for the F body, but it is a code 70 for the corvette. I have seen some pics of cars painted this color and I like it. Seems like it has a little bit of orange in it. Let's see if I can get a pic to load of a vette in this color..

The next color that I saw was called flame red. I don't know the RPO code or paint code for this one, but I found a pic of it on a thirdgen camaro here...

Now just yesterday, I was out with the fiancee' and we came across a car show and lo and behold there were 2 third gens in the back, they were both IROCS, and they were both RED!! Imagine that! One of them had the RPO sticker laminated on the window and it said WW8(aero pkg bright red) Anyway, I typed the RPO code in and found out that the paint code is code 81 WA 8774 Bright red. This is the color that I think that I want to paint my car. Can someone post up some pics of thier cars in any of those eifferent colrs, so I can get an idea as to how they look? Thanks for any help on this.. Paul M

Bright Red, Torch Red, and Flame red are all the same color code - WA-8774. They're the same color. Should help you narrow it down a bit.

GM renamed it depending on the year of the car and what car it was on for some reason. The differences in shade and hue are entirely due to lighting and/or the camera etc.

All "Bright Red" thirdgens are that color, but most are faded by now. Darkshot just got his repainted that color to give you an idea what it looks like when its fresh.

Mine is the same color also, but you can tell the paint is on its last legs.

My car was originally Bright Red, and the painter was suppose to retain the factory color on the respray, so you can see beat and old (but original), and the new spray for a compare. See the fquick link in sig. for photos.

Wow, that makes me feel kinda like... but at least now I know. The major problem is that I am colorblind(no I don't see in just black and white!) and have a hard time telling what shades of red are what. All I know is that I was never able to see a third gen in person with that color that had a paint code so I could search for it. I always had to resort to doing searches on the internet and as you can see depending on the age and whether or not the sun is out the color changes hue like you said. I just can't wait until everything gets done. I have the car painted a flat black primer spraypaint right now cause I have different ground effecets pieces from different cars that are all different colors. It has the 91-92 style ground effects and high rise spoiler with a Cervini's Ram Air hood and once I get the hood pins put in it should look killer. Once again, thanks for the info, you guys have been most helpful.

Re: Is your car red?? Then come on in.....

That is 100% wrong. Torch red is not the same as bright red or any other red. Torch red is a corvette color and never used on third gen cars, third gens first had blaze red then bright red and both different from torch red. Torch red is the brightest red of pretty much all reds. I like it the best. This is Torch Red

Ah ! that first photo, the one in your first post, thats my car and I took that photo probably 20ish years ago, with one of those disposable kodak cameras. The car was clean that day, but when the print came out.. the color red was WAY off in that photo. I think I still have that photo somewhere too. The color there in that print looks very orange-red, but in reality.. my car was never ever that color, it was just bad photography of some sort.

Re: Is your car red?? Then come on in.....

I was able to find the photograph that you showed in post #1 of this thread. I found a few other photos from that time period, and some that might have been from the same camera. Again, it was one of those fuji-film or kodak $10 throw-away cameras and I guess the sun-glare played some tricks with the camera, so thats why it looks more orange-red. See attached. There is no date stamped on the back of the photograph, but I know, for certainty that this was between between the years 2000-2002, because after 2002 I did different wheels and other modifications started coming.

To answer your original question, the paint on the car was all OEM paint at this time EXCEPT for the roof, a-pillars, and b pillars. My father and I painted them in 2000 because the clear coat had peeled so badly that parts of the roof were pink-red and even yellow tinged red. When we painted the roof and pillars (June 10, 2000) We used the oem paint color but I do not have it written down in my old notebooks as to exactly which paint and which codes were used. Nonetheless, it was an oem color because it blended very nice and stayed this way until the car's current paint job which was in April of 2008 and now it is a Deep flame red (i can get the paint code for that if you need it).
