trunk missing key
I just bought an 86 firebird 'parts-car'.
It doesnt have a trunk key; how can i get into the trunk?
I wanna check the condition of the trunk-support shocks and stuff.
Can I just drill into the lock? Or is there an easier way?
Thanks

Re: trunk missing key
the door key can fit. if it does not fit then have a lock smith open it - the mechanism can be sold and rekeyed by the new owner.

Re: trunk missing key
Is the rear interior trim in the car? If not you can just open it from the inside with a screwdriver. Does it have an electric hatch release? I think you may still be able to get a key made by the dealer if you have the VIN they can look up the key code.

Re: trunk missing key
thanks for the reply
My 86 iroc has been down for 7 years because im poor and other reasons.
But I knew that one day I woud get it running again. I came across and 86 firebird {junk/parts car} for $200. Its got a bad rod knocking, but its a complete 200k mile car. Im gonna take a lot of parts off of it and put my iroc back on the road. Im so happy. I already have the cracked head fixed. I should have it running today. I still have to put new plug wires on and finish putting the firebird steering column in. Then Im gonna start changing stuff.
The firebird is a junk car and i just wanna get into the hatch. I will take the vin to the dealer and see what he can do. The camaro used to be a city car that i ran on an 1/8 mile strip. Now I live in the country and its ALL highway miles. I hope that I can swap the rear end out ok. Mine has disk brakes and a posi that I will try to put onto the firebird rear. 4.11 gears are no good for me now. They were great for the 1/8th mile with slicks; but on the highway they are no good. With a TPI and 406 I think the gears in the bird will be a better match for a hiway car. I wonder what the gears are in the old bird. 2.8 liter/auto. Maybe 3.27?? I also wonder how to put the posi carrier in the birds rear. Can I just replace it and use the same shims???? Or will I have to set it up all over again? Im sure the brakes are a direct bolt-on? Any help would be appreciated. The steering column was a breeze; even tho it how has a firebird (screaming chicken) emblem on it. Its a good looking steering wheel. (leather wrapped). I also want the inside door pieces to fix my rattling (slow) power windows. I also took the power steering pump and a/c compressor off. My iroc has NO horsepower (maybe 300 on a good day); but it has over 400 ft/lbs of torque from about 2500 rpm to the redline of approx 5000 rpm, now "that" is a fun car to drive. Not the fastest; but with the (big/block like) torque it was great fun to drive.
wish me luck guys and thanks for your replies.
