Repaint, I need the original codes!
I'm repainting my teal 1992 Camaro. Last owner attempted this, and did a bad job, there are runs around the wheel wells and some mismatching colors that are hard to notice.
I need the exact color from the factory.
All I know so far is that it is "Dark Bright Teal" and WA # 9238 Code 37. What is the bodyshop going to need to reproduce it? One fender looks to be the exact color... maybe use that one for the whole car? What do I do?
Also, I would like to know how many clear coats the factory paint job had.
Thanks!

Just tell the paint shop the model and year of car and they should be able to look the code up.

When the shop looks up the code it will give them the formula to mix the color. But all it takes is 1 small drop of color, 1 drop too much or 1 drop to little, to change the color . If you ... or they are shooting the color it should have some sprayed out on a test panel and compared to the paint on the car to check for a good match. If at that time it need tinted to match it can be done with more of the same tinting colors that were used to mix it.
As far as the number of coats of clear the factory used originally, it's hard to say, because the factory does things different than we do in the repair business and the materials are completely different now than what was used when your car was built. At the shop were I work we typically use 2 coats of high solids clear on the cars we repair.

You have all the necessary information to get paint mixed. Are you having a shop paint your car or just mixing paint for you?

I can't tell you what it's going to cost in your area. Here $2000 wouldn't quite cover a nice job, but we tend to remove everything that touches the paint and do a high quality job. We won't do a lesser quality job even at the request of the customer. Our name is on it!

I would think it would be at least a little cheaper if the car had no weatherstriping, doorlocks, etc.?

you can do it yourself for about that
i know some people dont have the tools and yes sometimes a shop to do it is better.
luckily my grandpa has great painting skills to.. hes done over 15 complete restos on older cars (1920-1950) and he's won "best paint" from major car shows in indiana and illinois numerous times. car shows like "goodguys" "nationals" etc. its good to have a master car builder in the family. besides me that is hahaha jkjkjk

Re: Repaint, I need the original codes!
I really wish I could help everyone on here paint their car. In person. It's such a satisfying feeling to accomplish something like that. With a little knowledge and some basic tools you can get professional results. But jumping in with both feet and no knowledge of what you're doing isn't going to get you the finished product you desire. Especially on the first try. A little practice goes a long way ... I guess we all have to start somewhere.
