Can you remove deck lid?

I was wondering if you can safely and easily removed the rear deck lid? It would be so much easier to work on plus it doesn't line up with the rear quaters very well is there a way to adjust the hatch? Thanks guys.

There are two nuts under the headliner trim piece for each hinge. If you loosen them you can do your adjusting. Remove all four nuts and two at the struts and the hatch is free. Its way too heavy for one person to manage. 2 people holding it while a third removes the fasteners would be ideal.

If you are looking to separate the rear deck from the glass thats possible too. Just remove the plastic trim from the interior, remove the hydraulics for the rear glass, remove related nuts on the deck lid, heat up that nasty black tar looking adhesive with a hair dryer and lightly pry on it, just don't crack your rear hatch glass. The reason it may not line up is slightly debated, all the way from factory screw up to age. Whatever the reason do a search on that, many people have extremely detailed disassembly, and re-install directions, with favorable results.

Re: Can you remove deck lid?

Are you trying to remove the whole glass hatch, or just the steel deck lid behind the glass?

If you are taking off the whole glass hatch, be sure you remove the lift supports that keep the hatch open FIRST. I went to a yard to get a used set of hinge bolts, when the yard guy took the bolts out, he did not remove the lift supports and caused the whole hatch to literally explode.

If you are just taking off the metal lid behind the glass (where the spoler mounts to) it is doable, but look into the weather stripping first. I had a bodyshop remove and reinstall it for me. If I remember correctly I tried to get all the new rubber, but i think it was all discontinued or REALLY expensive. When the body shop put it back together they used alot of black silicone or some kind of gasketing goop. I haven't had it on the road or in the rain yet, so I'm hoping everything is sealed... There are I believe 4 bolts behind the plastic under the hatch, a few trim pieces and spoiler need to be removed first of course.

They wanted allot to charge you, I just bought a new hatch seal just a few months ago and it was $30 from advanced auto. Just make sure and put it on right. Looks to simple to mess up but it only fits great one way, if you think you got to much and need to trim it, its on the wrong way.

Re: Can you remove deck lid?

I meant all the seals for under the metal deck and spoiler. Yes, it's a good heads up for the hatch seal though...
