Is this car a good deal?

Sorry for the Newbie post, but I saw this car and its really catching my interest. I have been throwing around the idea of getting another F body (Had a 94 Z28), and am a fan of the Pontiac 3rd gen cars. So I stumbled on this one, and just want some feedback from others on what they think about it:

PROJECT CAR!!! NO MOTOR,NO TRANS. 1988 Firebird Formula,WS-6,342 posi,t-tops,16" aluminum wheels,nice body(not all rusted out),inteior is decent. $400.00

Does it look like a decent start? Not too worried about a motor/trans for it, as those are easy to come by around here. Anything special I need to look for?

Re: Is this car a good deal?

Looks like a snowy climate....I'd look for rust underneath, from road salt.

Yep one bad thing about being in Michigan. I am waiting for a reply about the underside and possible pics.

"Not all rusted out" sounds to me like "This car has a substantial amount of rust but not necessarily enough to make it fall apart under it's own weight."

Hey, just up the road (I-75). You'll want to get a look at the floors. All that primer along the edges on the passenger side is not a good sign. I paid that for a solid donor car with engine and trans last year. Where is the car at? I might go look at it with you if you want a second opinion.

Re: Is this car a good deal?

That primer just happens to be in spots that commonly rust out (lower quarters, quarter lip, door bottom). I'd bring your magnet out, check for bondo behind that primer keeping everything together. And check and see if all of the wiring and computer are still intact. Check the floor pans for rot, my guess is you'll find it. If you don't, then sure, go for it, I'd pay $400 for a straight shell for my wreck. I can't find one, so I might be doing a roof this summer...yippee.

Lol if you sit in it and the floor falls through, its not a good deal :/. Make sure there is isn't a lot of underside rust and bad floor panels etc

Re: Is this car a good deal?

all depends what u paln to do with that car, parts or restoration or jsut drive it.

if you wanted to restore it you can find better conditioned cars for like 700-800 bucks with a motor and transmission save yourself alot of body work and hassell

but all depends what you want it for and how much hassell and money your willing to spend

Re: Is this car a good deal?

Automatic car...wouldn't it have a 2.73 or 3.23 at best?? Thought 3.42s were the 5 speed performance package? Unless it's aftermarket or the rear end was replaced, then obviously that fact doesn't matter.

Michigan's like that, salted roads. My last truck was so rusty it didn't cast a shadow. A thirdgen F-body around here with solid rockers and floors is pretty rare. Usually came from somewhere else if it solid.

Re: Is this car a good deal?

I never heard back from the seller. May look for one down in Tennessee or so to get away from the salt issue.

Or a V6 car that was changed over, it has 3:42 stock.

some I4 had 4:11s

Was doen on smaller engines to compensate for the power loss but still give you some get up.

Re: Is this car a good deal?

$400? I'd grab that in a heartbeat... especially is if it is really what the guy claims it is. Run the VIN number and check to make sure everything is right. If that's a real ws6, I'd get it asap. That's just me though.

Re: Is this car a good deal?

Yea but it is a true formula body, either that or someone else like me spent too much money to create a formula, so that would be v8 only. Doesn't matter much to me, just was curious, and a little food for thought if he wanted to address the original seller with that, if he even cared.

My suggestion, keep looking

Re: Is this car a good deal?

Thats dumb though, the car is worth that for just the posi and WS6 stuff.

Soon as you get one and then later start looking and pricing similar parts to make yours handle youll kick your own azz for missing out on parts that cheap.

Could part the car for allot more then $400

Re: Is this car a good deal?

it all depends on the other cars in your area. supply and demand! last year i paid 2500 for my iroc and still had to do a lot of body work to get it to where it is now. and that was a pretty good deal. i wouldnt expect to find much better of a car for $400. I would say your best bet may be to find two $1000.00 cars and make one driver out of them.
