Protecting bare metal

This winter I'm planning on starting some body work on my car, and plan to media blast the engine bay. How do I protect the bare metal from flash rusting before I prime it with a self etching primer? OR am I suppose to use the self etching primer immediately?

Thanks guys

Re: Protecting bare metal

I remember reading this Magazine article...

They put bare metal stripes on this Nova, looked pretty wild. They kinda grained the steel by directional sanding, then sealed it with this stuff. I have the article around here somewhere, I'll find it. Thought that may not be what your looking for.

I would say though, if you planning one a conventional prime/paint/clear operation. I would just prime it good now if your conditions are right (temp, humidity). Might even do the base coat too if your going that rout. Beyond that I dont know what will provent surface rust without applying some kind of sealant.

Re: Protecting bare metal

Etch primer (on bare metal spots only), then an epoxy primer (covering everything) would be ideal. No rust issues whatsoever if applied properly, and you can just clean it off and shoot it when its time for painting. This is the order it should be done in, from first to last:

- CLEAN Bare metal
- Metal conditioner/Etch primer
- Epoxy primer
- Primer Surfacer
- Sealer
- Base
- Clear
