Door Hanging Low and Scraping.. What do I need??

Ok. So I bought my new 87 Iroc-Z28 and it seems and though both doors are haning low.. when you go to shut them they hit the door sill and scrap it up pretty badly.. i noticed that you have to pick up the door a bit and it would shut normally.. Just wondering what needs to be replaced that would be causing this.. Thanks for any input..

Re: Door Hanging Low and Scraping.. What do I need??

Common problem for our cars with the half ton doors. Lol just kidding. Well the best case senario would be that the hindge pin bushings are wore out and need replacing. I would suggest adjusting the door by loosening the door hindge bolts (behind the kick panel) and adjusting the door with a friend's help to shut normally until you can get the pins replaced. Otherwise you risk damaging the door latch and/or the body at the striker bolt. Worst case would be that the holes for the bushings are wore out also (depending on how long the doors have been sagging). Having personally not had to replace them yet i cannot provide you with any tips on replacing them.

Do a search on this site. Been done a zillion times. Not the easiest job but certainly do-able. You'll just need a floor jack to hold the door up and a GM spring compressor. And of course your new pin and bushings. You can buy them here. http://www.top-downsolutions.com/index.php

Yes, thats the case many times, but doing the upper bushings will help. You can test the hinges by having a friend pull up easily on the rear of the door while you watch the hinge and bushings. You'll be able to tell if it's one or the other or both.

Re: Door Hanging Low and Scraping.. What do I need??

The best advice to help keep the hinges in good shape is to not leave the doors open with the motor running the combined weight of the door and the viberation of the motor eats the bushings and pins.
I have never done this but it would seem to be a good idea is to have rubber wedges for the bottom of the door to help take the weight off the striker pin when closed. I had a Peterbuilt semi that had the wedges form the factory as part of a severe duty cab kit they really did work to help save the hinges after 3/4 of a million miles...

You can get the "Pin and bushing" Kit from your local GM dealer. Its really cheap (8 bucks if I remember right) Have two friends help you. Like kevin84Z28 says, you will need the spring compressor. I used to do them all of the time when I worked at the bodyshop. It sucks, but you can do it!
Good luck!
