Sell or part out my '86 IROC?

Here's the deal. As a father/son project, my 17 yr old son and I have spent the last 2 1/2 years slowly restoring an '86 IROC. We've replace the entire interior, pulled and rebuilt the anemic LG4, using only the original block (bored .030) and crank (turned). Almost every part we've used was either new or NOS and cost a fortune. The engine has all high dollars parts and runs great. TRW pistons, Crane Cam, Trick Flow Aluminum heads, 1.6 roller rockers, ZZ4 intake, etc. The body was already nice, that's why I bought it.

Any way, we're done. Now we want to sell her and start on another. Now I know you never make money on a project like this, but I paid $4,600 for the car just because the body was nice. The most I've been offerred on this car is $4,000.00. I'm seriously considering parting out this car. I don't think it would take long to get well past $4,000.00 in parts. The Corvan guage kit was $749.00. The Trick flow heads were $1,200.00. The March Serpentine kit was $500.00. The new quadraject was $600.00. Along with all those obscure parts, I'll bet I can make more in parts.

I wouldn't trade the father/son experience for anything, but I hate losing my *** on the project. Am I a jerk for thinking about destroying this nice car?

Thanks,

I can't blame you for parting the car. You'll definitely make more back than of you sold the car whole. Same goes for the engine in my experience.

Unfortunatley there's an unwritten rule of car crafting that says you will recoup 50% of the money spent in parts and 0% of your labor. The father/son thing is cool;you guys have a lot of good memories and learned a lot together, and you can't put a price on that. That motor sounds pretty trick! Buy all means PART IT OUT.This way you can make SOME money and have the satisfaction of knowing that you are contributing to other rodders' projects.Buy the way, will a '86 IROC hood fit on a 92 RS? (hint-hint)

I'm not sure, but if you find out it will, make me an offer. I'm guessing shipping would be expensive. I haven't decided yet to part it out, but I'm leaning that way.

I hate to see a nice car parted out, but when you think of the money, yes its easier to get more of your money back. Think of the father-son thing as sort of an amusement park; You spend lots of money, that you will never see again, but you are really paying for the memories. The IROC hood will fit a 92 RS.

Re: Sell or part out my '86 IROC?

You can get your money back but finding the right buyer is work. Some will glady over pay on market value for a car loaded with new part thats gonna be reliable. Mostly parents who don't want their kid to have a junker and go along with it, so they don't just buy any old car the kid thinks is cool. As other cars like yours for $4-5000 aren't gonna be the same.
