windshield molding
i am just about ready to shoot some primer and i was wondering if you guys think it is worth it to pull the windshield seal. i did a search and found that it can be done, but is it worth the time, money and effort. i am not changing the color and the paint is in good condition but i dont want it to look like crap when i am done especialy since i have removed everything else that i can from the car except that and the little rain gaurd above the doors.
oh ya, how do you remove that little rain gaurd? i tried to pry it off and it started to bend before coming off. i think it is just held on by double sided tape. i dont want to pry it off and end up with a mangled mess...unless they are cheap!! any help would be great!!

Re: windshield molding
maybe smear a very thin coat of grease on the windshield seal so that once the primer is dried you can just take a towel and wipe the grease off.

Re: windshield molding
Sorry but that is dumb. That would be the last thing I'd want to get near a surface that needs to be painted and the last thing I'd want on fresh primer.
irockid, that moulding is probably glued in with the windshield so it might come out in chunks leaving some behind. Mine started to come out good but ended up having the top half of the moulding ripping off from the part that sticks down by the glass. I was planning on getting a new windshield put in anyway so got out what I could. Tape it off good if you don't want to pull it out, did that the 1st time I painted my car.
Haven't delt with the rain guards so no help there.

Re: windshield molding
To remove the rainguards along the top of the side windows, you need to remove the weatherstripping. The guards are screwed into the body in the weatherstripping grove- I plan to remove mine when I strip the car down for paint...

I pulled the windshield molding off with the windsheild still installed and I ended up breaking the windsheild. I did wish I had removed the windshield the first time and saved the 180.00 for a new windsheild.

Re: windshield molding
i do appreciate all the idvice and ideas but i came up with idea myself. i am going to take a long piece of 14 gauge wire and put it under the windshield molding as far back as possible. that will leave a 1/4 inch gap to get paint under. i dont expect to paint the whole area under the molding but when i remove the wire there will be no paint line showing.
