84 Z28 Body damage
I have been slowly working on the car for a while now, but have come to the point that I just dont know what to do. When I got the car it had been hit in the side, right behind the drivers door. Its in the frame and I dont know how I should deal with it. Any idea's?

Doesn't look too bad. Take out the rear speaker and you have full access to that area. Start at the top of the damage and slowly work the dent out. Once the metal has been lifted start smoothing and repairing the surrounding areas. I've seen much worse. The picture doesn't show the extent of damage to the surrounding areas, but it looks doable.

I personally say theres no way you'll get that out with a hammer, but I agree you should try that first.
then if that doesnt work I'd say buy a stud welder with a slide hammer and that should get it out.
from the picture it doesnt look like the door gap was effected so you may have gotten lucky there.

The advice everyone else has given is great, getting behind it should help alot. Don't get too frustrated with your car, its alot better than mine. I'm in the process of replacing about 60-70% of the painted surface of my firebird, and I'll still have rust to deal with after that.

1# go get a free estaminet from a body shop to give to a rough idea.
#2 time and money.... in the end its just going to be better to replace the whole quater

Re: 84 Z28 Body damage
if you can't get it completely smooth after pounding, you could try smoothing it out with body filler. i'm not sure how orthodox others will find it, but in high school we were shown a body-working video that demonstrated it, so it can't be far off from taking it to a shop. doesn't look bad; but replacement may be too much hassle.

Re: 84 Z28 Body damage
Even using a stud welder will require the use of a dolly and hammer to smooth out the rest of it. The stud welder will only lift the damage. WHat do you expect him to do with the still remaining lows and highs? I suggest holding the dolly to the inside while hammering on the outside starting at the top. This will shrink the stretched metal and get it back t the original shape. It will ake time, but I don't see the need for a stud welder here since you can get hands all over it.

Tmic87tpi & scottmoyer, you 2 better stay in body shop school!!! First off you can get behind that dent from the speaker hole it's too low to get a hammer to it, besides hammering from the inside will only stretch the metal that much more. Get a stud gun and pull it right. Hammer and dolly it if you must but you guys need MORE training on body work. I understand you're trying to help but hammering from the inside isn't the way to do it! Putting on a new quarter panel also isn't neccecary way too much work, but don't believe me **** I've only been doin this for 30 yrs.
