Its time for paint!!
Alright guys. I know this has been covered every which way inside out and upside down. BUT! I STILL can't decide what color to paint my car. I need to schedule an appointment soon as I want it done in the next month. I will be jamming everything BUT the engine bay. So its going to stay red. Can you all post up some pictures of your RED cars. any and all shades are welcome. Please post what the exact color is too!!!
THANKS!!!
THANKS!!!

Yeah, thanks, I've looked through there and there are some nice colors. I want to do something like a candy apple but i think it would look horrendous with a bright red engine bay. pix are still good!

Re: Its time for paint!!
Definitely paint it whatever color you want. Don't spend that much money on a color you settle one. The engine bay will be easy to spray a nice chassis black later on down the road.
----------
Oh yeah, and if it helps, I decided on Viper Red. The same color as my dads 68 chevelle ss. I am going to paint the engine bay black when I pull the motor.

Re: Its time for paint!!
EH do you have pictures of the viper red?
I've been doing a LOT of research and I think I might stick with the bright red. Not even worrying about the engine bay any more, but I found a few pictures of a nice bright red and I think it looks real nice. The Candy apple looks good to, but i can't picture it on my car. I think the bright will pop a lot more and give me the look i want. Any pics of 'stock' bright reds would be great!!!

Check my sig. Stock bright red. It's also the same EXACT color as Rust-Oleum Sunrise Red (great for touch-ups).

I don't have any pics of the viper red. But it is way brighter than any red you will ever see. It hurts your eyes in the sunlight and has an orange tint to it in direct sunlight.

Re: Its time for paint!!
TTT
so, i finally scheduled an appointment to get my car painted, it goes in the shop Monday!!!! (insert 5 million or so happy faces here) I have to decide on a color still though. I want to keep it 'stock red' but i wanted to do something different in addition to that. I talked to the body shop about putting in a metal flake or a pearl over the stock red. He said he can do that, but if it ever needs touch ups its hard to match. does anyone know if there is an IDENTICAL match to the camaro stock red but metallic? I know my car has NO metallic at all.
any advice would be good... its almost time!!! thanks!

Re: Its time for paint!!
go to a ppg dealer, pick out the color YOU want......get it mixxed and tell them you want a sticker with that paint number on it, put that sticker over your factory paint code, if it was me i wouldnt pay extra for deltron or the higher base coat......shop line is cheap and covers better, just make sure you use a good clear.........tell him to use rubber-seal, its layouts out like you spent 10 hours buffing it

Re: Its time for paint!!
I definitely decided that I want it to be the stock red, I would just like a little 'something' in it so you can tell somethings not 'stock' even tho it 'is'. If that makes any sense at all.
The body shop I'm going to uses a top of the line Dupont base coat clear coat system. Hes going to seal the car, put on as many coats of color it takes, then 4 coats of clear. sanded and buffed. I've seen some of his work, He has a 68 camaro in his shop right now as well as a 69 chevelle. He also had an 80(ish) elcamino which I dont normally like, but the paint he put on it looked great.
I've talked to a few other shops and friends that are body men and they all say dupont is good paint... not the 'best' but far from the worst.
He's going to strip what needs to be stripped and leave what doesn't. I've heard that this could go either way... strip the whole car, dont strip the whole car. I know the factory primer is great, so I would like to keep a lot of that on if possible. My hood is flaking the clear coat real bad, so I know that has to come off anyways.

really? I've been told by numerous body shops that it is about that in just paint alone...

To answer the quesiton, my buddy was quoted $4800 to have his car completely taken apart, blasted, and repainted. Not saying you can't find a better price, but you get the idea.

dang.. i talked to the local paint dude here and hes pretty good hes saying to do mine for priming it and a getting the dents for a whole body paint its will cost me no less then $2300...

Re: Its time for paint!!
Also, be careful what you do the red to make it "not stock". Nice, obvious candies and metallics are cool, but of course, they're not stock. A friend had his bright red Mustang repainted, but he put a touch of pearl in it. The color itself looked killer, but in the sun, it looked like pink metallic!!!!!!
----------
My buddy's car is a 94 "25th" Trans Am show car, and he wanted PERFECT. You can do a lot for less.

Wow... GREAT point about the pink... again, one of those things that makes sense now, but if someone doesn't point it out, you wouldn't know. I wonder if thats only pearl, or if it would be a metal flake too? ( i think thats what he called it, he gave me a pearl option and a metal flake i believe)
Also.. when you say you can do a lot for less... does that mean you agree with the 1200 (even tho you thought it was low in your previous post) or do you agree with the 2300?
Again, thanks guys for your help... Although i've been working on my car for over a year and a half, its the first car i've built... Its a learning process so advice is good from you experienced members!!

Re: Its time for paint!!
Just an update on this:
It went into the body shop and I'm expecting to get it back Friday, the 30th I believe.
I decided on stock red, with a red metal flake sprayed on top. I'm pretty excited! I'll post pics next week if anyone is interested in how it comes out!!

2300 sounds fair to me if you want all body parts the same color. part removal, prep, primer, paint, clear, color sand, buff......it all takes time.

Yes, that seems like a fair quote going around.
I just heard from my body guy a few minutes ago, he said the car is preped and ready for paint... starting tuesday with the paint!

Re: Its time for paint!!
If you're doing a good quality job, then yes We generally don't do all-overs because they are so time consuming and backs up our regular work. But when we do, and on a car with very little needed bodywork, it's between 3000 and 3500 for the job. Usually it's double that though, because of severe rust and/or heavily damaged panels.

Re: Its time for paint!!
in your opinion, what is high qaulity work?.......on the ones that dont appear to need any body work do you just scuff and spray?..........if i charged 3500 for an all over job id never get any work........i dont have a 60,000 dollar spray bake booth or all the other high dollar, high tech tools.......the most expensive tool in my arsenal is probably my sata jet gun, which i payed a cool 600 for..........im thinking i might buy an iwata clear gun soon though
i guess yall go by the estimate book and take it to heart, maybe one day when i own a chain of established shops i can do the same.......
bac to topic, when can we expect some photos of the car

I have to call him at 8:15 this morning to finish discussing a few things. We agreed the car would be done by this coming friday, so as long as everything is going okay, i will have it back after work at the end of the week. Hopefully pics will be up friday night or sat morning (depending on how dark it is when i get home)

Re: Its time for paint!!
Heres an update:
I saw the car yesterday and it looks SO good! its all prepped and primed / sealed. He jammed it after i left yesterday and was starting to spray it today. Hes finishing it up tomorrow then sanding and buffing. All the body work looks great! heres a couple pictures! let me know what you think!
oh yeah, and i decided to go with the pearl. he did a test sample for me, and i love the way the pearl looked. we discussed the flake, but he was scared that by putting flake on it, it would require too many coats of clear to smooth it out properly, which would in turn crack on the plastic pieces. the pearl looks better anyways IMO! he got pushed back a day, so i'm looking to get it saturday now, which is okay, id rather he do it right! i'm just bummed cuz its supposed to rain saturday up here... so we'll see....
