Re: Widest rear tire???
what does everyone think the ideal tire size would be for the 15" rim? The wider the better... also 275's wont stick out too much will they?

Re: Widest rear tire???
I've run the BFG 295/50R16s on the back of my old 92, with no problems, and I know a guy who currently is right now.
I'm kinda eager for my rear tires to wear out. I "help" that out a bit!

Re: Widest rear tire???
Or go to your local NTB/Discount Tire (my favorite place here) and ask them. They'll know. Tire height will also play a factor, but that is determined by the sidewall % of the rated width.

Re: Widest rear tire???
They look baddass, and have that tucked in - beefy tire look with no rubbing issues whatsoever

Re: Widest rear tire???
This is a 295/50/15 on a 9" rim with 4.5" backspacing
This is a 275/60/15 on a 8" rim with 4.5" backspacing
Both have rubed when hiting a bad bump but the 275s didn't rub as much. I also rolled the rear wheelwell lip in and neather would rub when taking a hard turn but if i hit a dip and the whole back of the car squated the 295 still rubed some.
Edit: btw a 295/50 is a 10" tire and the 275/50 is 9"

Re: Widest rear tire???
oh, i'm not sure whether or not these rims are backspaced enough to kind of tuck them in so they wouldnt rub, they are probably about the same as the rims on the 275's.

Re: Widest rear tire???
Those are crager ss's on the firebird with 275s. If you roll the finder lip up you wont have a problem. Also the rearend in that car is alittle off center, and the tire that sticks further out did most of the rubbing b4 i rolled the lip. Btw you had to hit a BIG bump or dip for it to rub it wouldn't rub just taking a corner or anything.
Do you know what the back spacing is. Probly 4.5

Re: Widest rear tire???
ya i think it is 4.5, how did you roll the lip? with a hammer? ok so i have had people say 275, 295, and 315's... also, the second number (45, 50....) is the bigger the number, the more the tire will bulge, which makes it more prone to rub????

Re: Widest rear tire???
The first number (275) is how wide it is, the second number is (60) is a % of the first number, and it shows how tall it is.
A 275/50 would be perfect for you. It is shorter than the 275/60 i had so you might not have any problems rubing.

Re: Widest rear tire???
Wait...So you put a 19" tire on an 18" wheel?
Not that my tire sizes are close to what you guys are wanting to run. I daily drive on a 295/35-19 on a 10" wide wheel. Would've gone wider but they didn't make the tires I wanted wider. Looks like I still have another 1" of tire I could stuff under there.

Re: Widest rear tire???
the 295's are pretty wide and have some tread left on them so i would be very happy if they fit fine... is it a noticeable difference between 295 and 275??

Re: Widest rear tire???
Ya there is a noticible diffrence. I have had 295s for a long time so when i got the firebird with the 275s the back tires just seemed to narrow, even tho there is only a 1" diffrence.

Here are my 17x11s on the rear with 315/35/17s. Minor inner fender massaging, minor work on the bump stops, no fender lip work, no rubbing.

Re: Widest rear tire???
I sincerely hope no one reads this ancient thread and then goes out and buys air shocks to clear ill-fitting wheels/tires. It was a dumb idea way back when this thread was posted, and it hasn't gotten any smarter since.

Re: Widest rear tire???
Yep, and air-shocks are best suited for full-frame cars, not uni-body cars, and NOT for the purpose of clearing tires that are too wide...
