1985 Z28

hello all,,

my name is brandon i have recently purchased my first thirdgen camaro the car is great and i wouldn't change a thing about it.. i do have a few questions about the car that i have spent some time on the internet about and found some pretty interesting things though there are few questions that i still can not find answers for.. the car is a 1985 Z28 T-top 5 speed car came factory with a 305 seems to have all power options except a radio yes i said radio the car has a radio delete..wierd huh??? no speakers anywhere and a block plate where the radio goes.. i put the car on craigslist recently to pay some bills and to my surprise in the first hour three people called and asked the same question "did you paint the car that color" when i say no it seems that everyone wants to come and get it right away so i guess im just not sure what i have.....well if you guys could help with any answers i would greatly appreciate it..
i do have some pics of the car on craigslist at
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/523446953.html.

thanks alot

Re: 1985 Z28

According to my 85 Camaro Brochure, the only blue offered for IROC's was bright blue metallic. The only other color offered was dark blue.
The White Book mentions 17,635 bright blues and 14,986 dark blues and both were produced for several years. So it would appear that neither is particularly rare. That said, supposedly there were 11,684 silver metallics (the color of my car) and I've NEVER seen another up close and personal.

While the wheels are from an IROC, they aren't from an 85. FYI, IROC's could be had with a plain jane LG4 with 155 hp and a manual or an auto transmission. Check the RPO codes in the console. If you locate a B4Z, you have an IROC (or simply check the door placard for 16" wheels).

The quartz clock accompanied cars equipped with AM radios (and I suggest radio delete cars as well) since those radios weren't equipped with a digital clock. There were 809 (RPO U35) quartz clocks produced in 85.

Sorry, can't help there. I doubt that records of that nature were kept. No source of mine, by the way, shows a pastel blue in 1985. Paint code 26--and I'm unsure if that's the same as the 26U--is dark blue.

That figure for the silver cars sounds about right. The only silver IROC I've seen in person is mine, several Z28's and countless sport coupes. Maybe the majority of those 11,684 silver cars were 4/6 cyl sport coupes that were junked long ago and out of all of our memories.

Bright white wheels? That's very odd. What seems weird about the radio delete, is the fact that it's still there. It amazes me that nobody has installed a radio and speakers after all these years.

Only IROC's got the silver metallic, according to the White Book. I doubt that the clocks were available with the stereo radios since those radios would have had digitals clocks.

OK, that part of it has to be wrong then. I have seen several silver '85's that I know were, in fact, '85 models and originally silver. I know where there is currently a silver '85 Z28 in a local junk yard (been there for the last 8 years). It's original faded, nasty silver paint with charcoal GFX and matching original wheels. Red custom cloth interior, manual windows/locks, t-tops, lg-4 and 700-r4. I tried to buy the car when they first got it in, but there was no title so they wouldn't sell it.

I was curios about the clock because I have one from an '85 parts car and I don't remember it having an AM radio.

Here's an interesting thread about silver metallic cars:

Hmm, my '85 PPG color chart shows two silver paint colors for the f-body, but it just matters if the car was built in Cali or not. There's just a very slight difference between the two.
Dealer brochures have been wrong from time to time, dual contuer seating (I know they existed, just not in a Camaro) and '86 Lier-Seigler driver seat come to mind.
***edit***After taking a look at the '85 dealer brochure, the colors with the asterisk read "IROC-Z available in these colors only" as opposed to "These colors only available on IROC-Z".

Nice clean car too Mine is a rust bucket that still needs saved. It has tpi, t-tops, gray custom cloth (will be red), red striping (I think they all did) and oddly, a 3.42 disc rear with NO posi. I plan to keep it mostly stock, just a 5speed setup and a few uncommon options.

Though I'd never read the brochure in that light, your reasoning is sound. At any rate, I've never seen another one, IROC or otherwise, except in pictures--you'd think if there 11 thousand odd of them running around out there, I'd have stumbled across one by now (but then again how many of those 11 thousand are still on the road?). By the way, as you may have suspected, my dual conteurs are from an early Firebird or TA.

Re: 1985 Z28

On the console clock(RPO-U35)it was standard on the Belinetta '82-'83 and part of RPO-Z28 '82-'85.It was deleted when one of the electronic integral clock radios was ordered as JamesC stated. But you could still order it separate as the original owner of my '83 Z28 apparently did(there are only a couple options they didn't order).

Re: 1985 Z28

So am I to understand that color code 26u (stated by James C as pastel blue) is deemed "dark blue" by the brochure/GM definition?
If so..how many other variants are there in the dark blue category??
Also ..I thought the "u" only stood for "upper", as in upper car color.
Anybody have answers?
