ANY UPDATES??

 

Good work man Im starting on my 91 RS

 

Well, I have not given up! Its been some time since I have been able to work on the car though. Here is a short version of the story.

Back in September 09 I was really making progress on the car. I got almost all the priming done and painted the all the jambs. Then, northeast Ohio shut me down with cold weather. On top of that, my parents told me to get the car out of their garage because it had been there too long.

I did the only thing I could do, rented a garage. It all looked good and I have the room to get the car done now. But then (yes, another "but then") the bills started rolling in. A combo of the bills and garbage at my job has shut me down since late November 09. The car has been sitting in the garage since then...untouched except to be started now and then.

I am looking for a better job and am hoping to get this thing done soon. I'll try to find some pictures of what I did between my last post and now. For now, here is a picture of how it sits now.

 

I hope everything gets better for you so you can get that thing done there is a lot of us waiting to see what it looks like. Great job so far man

 

Any updates? Man this was a big project... forgive me if I missed anything but didn't you have the car practically completely reassembled? Now all I see is a camaro skeleton lol. But it's a sweet project, I love what you've done to it. I wish I could do nearly as much to my 91 T/A 'vert as you have done to your car (check the link in my sig).

 

Hey everyone, still not much to update about, unless installing a fuel pump cut off switch is update worthy . I finally got a second job and have some possible side work coming in shortly so hopefully I will have the money to get started on the car again soon.

I did have the car almost together at one point last year. Of coarse I decided to strip the car again and put better primer on. This put me behind schedule even more but has been well worth it. All that is left is to finish a small amount of primer, paint it, and put it all together.

 

Hello everyone! I know everyone probably thinks Im dead or gave up at this point, but this is not the case. Im alive and kicking and almost done with the car!

After nearly three years I am only days from painting the car. Once the car is painted, all that is left is to put the exhaust on, put the interior in, have the windshield installed, and enjoy.

I will have some pictures of the painted car by next week, but for now I have some of it as it stands now. Sorry for the low quality, I seem to have misplaced my camera.

 

I managed to get the car painted early Sunday morning. It came out pretty good, but it needs a little sanding and buffing still to make it look really good. The windshield went in yesterday so now all thats left is to put the interior, install the exhaust, assemble the car, and take it on its first road test.

Here are some pics of it sitting outside the day after paint. Hopefully I will get a better camera shortly.

UPDATES!?!?!??!?!?

 

Sorry for such a delay everyone! I am still around, I just totally forgot about posting updates about the car. I did finish it and get it back on the road in early October 2010! There are still some minor things to do, but it drives great! It took a lot more than I expected to complete the car since my last post. I ended up repainting a door and a fender because the plastic walls of my "paint booth" got sucked into the side of the car. The lights proved to be interesting to install also, mainly due to some bad grounds that had me going in circles.

I don't have many pictures because shortly after finishing the car, I jumped into moving out of the garage I was renting and a ton of other things. After all that, winter hit and the car has been hiding in the garage since November.

The paint came out fantastic, after hours and hours of wet sanding and more hours of buffing. Getting rid of all the swirl marks was a killer. I ended up using Meguiars Swirl X with a microfiber cloth by hand to finally get rid of them. I ended up going with the angel eye headlights. I love the way they look with the black. Also have to love the fact that I can use halogen bulbs now . I installed LED light strips in the vents and changed all my gauge lights to blue LEDs (5 angle 194 style). The pictures don't really do it justice.

Thanks! Black looks absolutely amazing...when its clean. I love the look of black, but slightly underestimated the amount of maintenance it takes to keep it looking good. Ive tried many many things, but still haven't figured out a way to prevent scratches from washing the car.

 

Good luck on the junkyard searches. Here in Jackson, MS there are about 10 junkyards, and almost no third gen firebirds or cameros left (everything below 1990 has been recycled). Been searching boneyards for months during my 1985 restoration, and have found almost nothing useful other than a couple of small interchangeable parts off of the only one or two 1992 third gens we have in any of the yards. Websites seem the best source for me thus far....esp. e-bay, third gen, craigslist

 

Yeah, the junk yards are going through these cars fast. I went to many yards that told me, "we have one, but its pretty much stripped". I was lucky to have a family friend who has a yard with five thirdgens in it (3 camaros, two firebirds). I got a ton of parts from there.

 

If you so much as LOOK at black paint the wrong way, you will scratch it. But yeah seriously i know what you mean. Good for you for sticking with it. Hard work pays off.

 

Trick is to not wash it. Washing your car with soap and water destroys the paint. You have to keep a ton of wax on it all the time, new microfibers everytime you wax and when you do wax, california duster the car off first. Start from the very top of the car and work your way down, obvioulsly becuase there is more dirty the lower down the car you go. Cant drive the car in the rain either haha

I got my car painted about a year ago, garage kept and didnt drive in the rain. Paint is spotless.

Now just driving your car and cleaning it its going to get small scratches, you cant help it but this seriously helped prolong that especially with my black paint

 

I definitely try to avoid the rain and washing the car whenever possible. I put three coats of Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax on a few months after painting. It definitely seemed to help prevent and major scratching while washing, but still didn't stop those fine scratch marks.

I'll have to get a california duster and try that method. I'm hoping to hit some shows this summer so I have to get the paint perfect, and get me some new wheels!
