Re: pictures of camaros with hood pins

im pretty sure 86 iroc z and I used the same method of mounting them. Underneath the hood to the inside of where the screw in rubber stops are there is some flat sheet metal... thats where i mounted mine and drilled the appropriate holes in the hood. By the way does anyone know where to find stainless hood pins?

I've seen them that close, but only when it was a full 10 pin, pin-on hood, no hinges.

Here's my wife's Camaro, from when we had it for sale, hence the vinyl letter & #s in the upper corners of the windshield...

Re: pictures of camaros with hood pins

thanks for asking this before I had to . The SS hood I have is warped slightly in one corner so I was going to go with the locking type hood pins to help fix this. They don't look that bad IMO so I think I will be going this route.

Re: pictures of camaros with hood pins

had the day off work and was bored out of my mind, so took a shot at doing pins myself. Had originally said i was going to let the body shop do them when it goes for paitn, but thought a **** it, gotta learn sometime
i felt freakin sick when i was drilling out the hood, but it turned out perfect.

Still probably have to drill out the holes a little more the pins just barely fit through. Scuff plates arent screwed in yet but threw em on just to snap some pics. Gotta adjust the pins too, and i dont know if the cables are staying or not, havent made up my mind.

Re: pictures of camaros with hood pins

i agree with your pin placement, kerplunk, but can you quickly go over the hood drilling procedure? once you locate the pins on the radiator support, then what? there must be some trick to locating where to drill the hood!! without f..'n it up!

When I did my wife's car, I used a da of paint on the hood pin tips, lowered the door until it touched, which left a dot of where to drill.

Used a small drill bit, like 1/8", from below, after masking both sides off.

Then slowly stepped up the drill bit size, until I got to the final size, drilling from the top this time.

Re: pictures of camaros with hood pins

lol the dab of paint is the smart way to go

i didnt have any paint so i just *Gently* smacked the corner of the hood down on the top of the hood pin and it left a little scratch on the underside of where to drill.
in retrospect this is not the best way it put a small dent in the hood skin (thats completly drilled out now) and just barely cracked the paint.
could have definitly cracked the paint bad by smacking it down, left a nice little center punch type mark to drill off fo tho.

i used a small drill bit first, then stepped right up to very close to the drill bit size of the final hole.
i drilled it all out from underneath, and covered the top side of the hood of where youre drilling with a whole bunch of masking tape. Not sure if thats the proper way to do it, but ive heard before to cover the area in tape to help prevent the paint from cracking.

Re: pictures of camaros with hood pins

why would you drill from the top to finish it out? does it make any difference? or i guess maybe just to clean up the hole a bit?

did you put tape over the hole and then drill on the tape or just drill right on the hood

Re: pictures of camaros with hood pins

When drilling something, it can cause the opposite side to crack/splinter, etc. If you drill from the top, any cracking/splintering, that might happen, would happen on the bottom side, under the hood, not the outer surface.

Of course, you should use a good masking tape on both sides anyways. I just like to over work it, than mess it up, and spend way more & fixing cracked fiberglass.

Re: pictures of camaros with hood pins

Spend the $ though, and start with NEW bits, not worn out, used up bits.

Again, a little $ now, or $$$$$$ later.

It looks way bad. But just an idea... you could put two more on the outside. If you spaced 'em right you might be able to pull off that NASCAR look. It wont really fit the car or look better than two in the normal spots, but you've already got two in the wrong spot as it is, so you might be able to massage it a little and make it look okay.

But if it's getting replaced...
