what grit to sand clear to before recoating

Part of the car is black, so the clear coat has to be flawless. I sprayed 2-3 coats clear on the car but still managed to sand through the edges on a few spots. So i am sanding all of the runs/orange peel out of the clear coat and going to recoat with 2 coats again. I did this with some of the white pieces with amazing results, I barely had to sand them after that. But that was with a few white pieces.

I am using a DeVilbiss gun that retailed around $350, so the gun is not a problem. What grit paper should I finish with before recoating? 2000?

Re: what grit to sand clear to before recoating

you need to hit that 800 wet before you reclear, you use 2000 when you wet
sand out last cut before you compound the car .....600 or 800 as you need to
have the clear able to bond to the new coats, careful not to put too many coats on. I would sand all your orange peel down and hit it with one good
coat of clear. Then get the 1000 out and wetsand and then 2000 and wetsand, then get the polisher and the compound and finish it up....any questions got to http://autobodystore.com/forum/index.php and visit the forums as they will help you out ...

Exactly what I needed to know! So would it be a bad idea to use 1000 or 2000 before spraying the final coat of clear? I would be worried about being able to see those scratches on the black parts (there is no way you could see them in white).

800 is what you want to sand the clear with. the next coat of clear will cover it. with 5 coats of clear on it you'd better wet sand the hell outta that and make a show shine, thats alotta paint!

I might end up with a total of 5 applied coats, but I probably sanded through at lest one full coat to get the orange peel off. I just did not get the edges good enough.
