Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
I graduated in 2009. My first car (at age 16) was a 86 camaro with a 2.8. My dad had traded a gun for it when I was about 7. He rebuilt the engine and got it road ready shortly after that. It mostly sat in the garage until I got a hold of it. It got murdered by a 16 yr old girl that ran a stop sign 10/2010.
After that I paid $1200 for a 1984 z28 hardtop. It had to be towed home and it was over 4 months before it was driveable. It had some issues. But now its my daily driver.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
Yeah, I had a '82 (graduated in '87) Trans Am. It was silver with all the bells and whistles. I installed a pioneer system, cragar wheels, headers and window tint. The girls fainted as I drove by...well not really, but that's the story I'm sticking with. I wrecked the car and it was beyond repair. BUT, GOOD NEWS! I now have an '86 Trans Am that actually belonged to a girl I went to high school with! Yeah, small world! I was a little jealous of her back then because she had the t-tops and I didn't and she didn't faint either (she was so hot). Sweet revenge, I have her car now! I contacted her on facebook recently and sent her a pic of the car, she was so excited and asked if I would take her for a ride when I got it going again. HECK YEAH!

No, but I sure wanted one in high school!! I graduated in 88 - the third gens were still too expensive for me when I was in high school. I had a diesel datsun king cab that got like 40 mpg. 0-60 in low 10's (10 days! LOL)

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
I think its said that im one of the only kids I know in my time period and grade that really care about thirdgens at my school its all about nissans, mitsubishi, honda stuff like that Ive owned 2 thirdgens my old 88 Camaro that I got last year and sold 2 weeks ago and my current 86 Trans Am, my camaro was my baby and my trans am is my new baby, Now that I own a thirdgen I posted a picture on facebook and I was surprised how many people liked the photo and people were talking to me in school about it telling me how they wanted a 2nd or third gen model because they remember there parents old muscle cars and the stories that their parents would tell them when they were young and wreckless and owned a muscle car but now their parents dont want them to have one because it is too time consuming or costly to sink money into an old car and it is to costly to by a nice one... I bought mine myself and my parents are extremely proud of me, aslong as I don't spin the tires to much...

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
Well, I guess you could say I had one of those strict farm boy childhoods. It was crazy. I had money in the bank from working my own tobacco crop since 10 years old but I wasn't allowed to spend it. So I got Grandpa's hand-me-down 81 datsun pickup truck. I guess I got into mini-truckin then. But I really wanted the TA. I saw a 1970 shelby fastback in the junkyard for $800 - but again, not allowed to buy it. (WHAT a MISTAKE!!!) My dad hot-rodded all that crap back in the 60's and he was literally hell on wheels!! He was so bad, my Grandfather thought he was going to kill himself racing around the back roads, that he would lose his number one help milking the 140 cows they had. So I guess Dad was afraid i was going to do the same crap. I had to wait for my "muscle" car till later in life. I was a truck guy till gas went up and I sold my f-250 supercab. I loved that truck. But I got the car I always wanted and I WILL NOT be selling this one!! I'll see if I can find some pictures to entertain ya'll with. Stay posted.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
I knew there had to be a story behind it!! Lol!
Well, at least you have the car now that you wanted back in high school! I always wanted an IROC in high school but they were way too expensive. I had a friend with a 1984 Z28 which his parents bought him. I remember racing him in my mustang and i would just barely loose..I couldnt get over how cool the 3rd gens looked, the handling and loved the ttops...I knew when I got older that I would just have to have one and thats how I fell in love with the 3rd gen.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
That's an awesome story! I have a daughter is about to be 20. My son will be 17 in a couple months. The think third gens are the most gutter looking cars and wouldn't have one - believe me, I tried to buy one for them. Only our generation realize how frickin desired and cool these cars were back in the day!!! Give it some time, they will get the respect they deserve. There were a couple spoiled kids in town who had one - granted not anything like I got now, but they were bad ace cars. A guy had a car like that, he got the girls, got the looks around town, and had the fastest thing on the road. They were the stuff!!! I'm gonna include a few pics I dug up of that datsun. And also, the a couple of the pulling tractor that took the place of Dad's hell on wheels stuff. I grew up on the pulling tractor circuits. That is where all the tinkering and creativity went when I was in HS.

Its the whole retro thing...These cars are old enough now that if you have one in good condition people take notice--especially high school kids because they never see them on the road (at least out here in Seattle).

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
It could be locality? I don't know. There are still a lot of them around here in ******* USA. It is just hard to find one in great shape. I get a few looks driving down the road on a sunny summer day, but when I got to a cruise in, there aren't many people stop to check it out. I kind of get the feeling I am driving a poverty hot rod. There are 57 chevy's, gto's, and a ton of 1st gen camaros around here. Also, at 41, I am sort of a minority at the cruise in. Most are guys my dad's age in their ulitimate dream rides, and then a lot of teenage rice-mobiles. Sometimes you see some kick-*** old trucks and rat rods. But I'd not been to one all last summer where there were more than two 3rd gen cars there.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
Yeah, that is kind of funny - probably to someone your age. You weren't even walking or talking when my 3rd gen car rolled off the assembly line in December 84. (not knocking age, just trying to provide a frame of reference.) I guess it kind of depends on how old you are as to whether everyone had one or not. I guess the best comparison I could make would be like everyone in high school right now driving a 2010 or 2011 Shelby Mustang or Z28 Camaro. Those cars are $40K +!!!! I don't see a single one of them in my son's hs parking lot right now. So if one of them had one, they would be the stuff!! There was one Iroc in our hs parking lot, one firebird, and two 6 cylinder camaros. "They" were the stuff!! Now my son's class laughs at them. They all want an old rice-burner - like that is a "muscle" car. It just cracks me up!!

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
In high school my junior year 1985, my dad came creeping down our driveway in a red IROC with the gold trim. Pop was a GM service engineer and prior to that a Fisher Body trainer for GM. surprisingly he let me take the car out for the night. He never let me drive any of his cars before this. That made Camaros and specifically IROCS, my dream cars.
About 11 years ago I bought my 86 IROC and I'm dead set on finishing its ground up resto this year so me and my dad can ride again.

So many people in my school have their 5 colored 4cycl ricers, no one knows a nice car anymore, except my two friends who both restored old Chevy trucks with their dads and my other buddy with a 92 RS, but everyone else has a normal low price teenager car, a *****, or a brand new car mommy and daddy bought them, I personally would not want my parents to buy me a car, I think the responsibility and hard work that you used to get your car with gives you more respect than having someone buy you a $25k car

Oh god then theres a kid with a rusted out nissan truck with 4 inch straight pipe that has a transmission that slips into every gear......I could go on.

Yeah my school could use another third gen I always have to park in the back of the lot cuz I'm afraid something will happen to it. The ladies do love it though, especially when it had open headers haha

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
but everyone else has a normal low price teenager car, a *****, or a brand new car mommy and daddy bought them, I personally would not want my parents to buy me a car, I think the responsibility and hard work that you used to get your car with gives you more respect than having someone buy you a $25k car
Dude. I went to a Christian College Prep School up in Seattle for a few years, and everyones moms and dads bought them cars. Not old cars to work on, new cars to wreck while talking on their IPhones. One guy had like a 1988 BMW M3. It was pretty cool. But very few people at my school showed up in something sporty.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
At 15 I purchase a 1999 S10 and loved it. One day in the summer of 2011 I was driving down the street and noticed a 1982 Firebird TransAm for sale in a lot. I was attracted to its very clean condition so I peeked in the window and saw that the odometer had 39,000 miles on it. Yes, 39,000 original miles. I called the guy up and got the history on the car as well as the specs. 305 V8 fuel injected with all the trim. It had been bought new and kept in a garage its whole life. Started every week to keep gaskets and rubber lubricated. I had a for sale sign on my truck for less than 24 hours and it sold for the same price that I purchased it 2 years earlier. I had the money in hand scraped up what savings I had and picked up the car for $5,500. I love my car and put all of my money towards it. So far it has a new battery, new alternator, new spark plugs, new cruise control assembly and speedo wires, a few new gaskets, new tires, brand new rims, new window switches and motors, seat covers to protect the flawless upholstery, new stereo, rockford fosgate speakers all around. I have been keeping a strict "no drilling holes" motto and make sure not to intrude on the original condition and nature of a purely original car. Regular service every 2,500 miles, washed weekly and an occasional wax. The center console lid was peeling so I recovered it with high quality blue leather. The hood of the car is slightly faded and my uncle and I are waiting for 70* weather for a touch up paint job. I am 17 and enjoying my car. I work for my money and worked for the car. The fact that it came from my own sweat and labor makes it much more valuable to me.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
I had an '82 Firebird with a 4-cyl. for about 3 months of my senior year (1997). Traded it for a '90 T/A hardtop with a 5.7 which I had the rest of my senior year. My now wife went to school 100 miles away so I had to trade for something more fuel efficient on the highway, but I never forgot that car. The interior of my 92 'vert now gets me all nostalgic!

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
i got mine 6 years ago, and i am only a freshman now, its a project between me and my dad. It is a 1989 camaro rs with posi rear out of an 87, a 355 ci engine, custom MONSTER transmission, and a custom interior. We have invested a lot in to it so far, and the next thing to come is a paint job. The first pic is of when we first got it, and the others are current pics.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
You kids are lucky. I drove my mom's '85 Plymouth (un)Reliant POS Edition back when I was in high school. Being an affluent neighborhood, very few kids drove their parents' car or a beater... most kids' parents bought them brand new Mustangs, BMWs, or Honda products (or an older Civic Si of a specifically desirable year). Nobody had a third gen unfortunately, which only proves to me that none of those kids had good taste anyway. LOL. Ok, ok, maybe they didn't have bad taste....their cars were very nice. But I like third gens better.

Re: Did u have a Thirdgen in highschool?
Well, I don't think I've posted in this one yet, so... I'll try to give a summary
Bought my Bird (2.8/700R4, either Flame Red or Bright Red, don't know for sure without the RPO sheet, but it did have pinstripe, first registered with 194,676 miles on the clock) 12 hours before turning 18, from a guy who (bleep)ed up EVERY SINGLE THING HE TOUCHED FROM THE FRONT TO THE BACK. Doesn't matter whether it was the engine (got like 5 MPG and stalled a LOT before it blew), body work (pass side quarter panel I'm STILL fixing, pass side door, bumper covers, front air dam missing, 2/3 primer), brakes (front pass side caliper was BOLTED on using washers for spacers) or the interior (missing screws and headliner was recovered but not right), he found a way to screw it up. Did not get a chance to drive her to school except for my last exam, Sep 21, 2003. She made me 47 minutes late for my last ever exam (was allowed to be an hour late max). Good thing I passed the exam or I REALLY would have been . Drove dad's Cavalier to the graduation rehearsal and didn't make it to graduation (was sick)... So nobody got to see her.
2.8 blew about 9 months and about 800 miles later (not too sure on the miles, but was re-registered with 195,239.7 on the clock) due to overheating and the fact I put the wrong oil in it . Had a 3.1 dropped in as a present for going back to school for auto technology, and promptly found a transmission problem (TCC not locking up). Dropped out the 700R4 for a T5 in March of 2006 (at 213,831.6) after buying a 93 3.1 Grand Prix coupe (178K, bought for $450) to drive to work. Had to rebuild the T5, but it ended up failing anyways due to the fact that the case busted at the countershaft when the J/Y guy pulled it, so it was swapped for one from the next year (an 85 NWC). Car went from getting 27 MPG after the 3.1 was dropped in (with bad MAF, injectors, and EGR) to 30.
Went back to school in 2007. Planned on working on the car there. Job situation (was out of work for 3 months because nobody would hire me) dictated otherwise. Graduated in 2008. Didn't get the promised job and went back to work at the restaurant I had been in from 2005 until it closed in August 2008. Out of work for another month, got stuck dropping the transaxle in mom's 1993 Plymouth to replace a broken flexplate in the meantime (she later sold the car to buy an Intrepid that gets 18 MPG on a good day after I dumped some $500 into it!). Got a job, dropped in a harness from a wrecked 91 to swap to speed density. Harness had an ignition problem, so the project was dropped and harness cut for parts (but I have a spare harness anyways for it, just don't want to take the chance).
Remember how I said PO f-ed up EVERYTHING he touched? In May 2010, I was talking with a neighbor (who restores big-rigs in his spare time) about a crack I've had along the body line in the pass side quarter for as long as I know. Pulled on the crack and found about 3/4" of Bondo slathered on underneath and a big rusty mess. Went further up the panel and found more Bondo covering what I would guess is hail damage (it WAS an Alabama car). Over the years, the weatherstripping leaked (t-tops, PO lied about that too), the suspension bushings were shot (never could get a perfect alignment because the settings would change due to the bushings), rear springs sagged and fronts sat too high due to deletion of the 700R4 and A/C (and probably other things), interior parts broke, etc. Decided a full frame-off do-over was in order. So far, I'm $3800 in (not counting the crap rust-proofer I'm going to need to have sandblasted off to start over again), and only need to buy brake parts (everything except the booster, master and prop valve, calipers, and rear backing plates), fuel system parts (external pump, filter, regulator, lines, hoses, fittings) and exhaust (everything... literally) and should start reassembly soon, even if it's just enough to get to the sandblaster. I'll be coating the entire body with the rust-proofer under the paint so I don't need to deal with any more of this blasted WNY rust crap.
I figure that by the time my HS reunion comes up (I decided when I graduated that I'm still not going as I hated that whole town... don't ask!), I'll have had my car through 3 separate paint jobs and put about as much into it overall as it was bought for NEW in 1987... Except it will look like a 91 half-breed (cross between base model with GFX and a Formula), and have 100 HP over stock . Which isn't easy when you keep a V6 under there (not putting a V8 in my car under ANY circumstances and nobody else will either as I'm never selling it!). I have pics elsewhere and can't repost... Currently, the odometer reads just under 248K, most of which was put on while I went to school out of state. Yes, she's done a lot of sitting.
