Re: spary paint
Even if you get enough coverage, spray paint is uncatalyzed and will not hold up like auto body paint. The onyl real way to paint a car is with a gun and real auto paint.

Re: spary paint
My spray can project, its temporary (depending on how long it stays nice of course) and just trying to get it back on the road.
Almost all of the front half is done, except the passenger side fender, as seen in the pics. Whole underside is done, I can post more pics of the underside if you'd like. In the last pic, the bumper is pretty dusty, and I haven't wet sanded or buffed it yet, I sprayed the clear for that with a touch-up gun but have since boughten a bigger HVLP for the clear. Anyhow, I like the color and everything seems to be doing ok they way I'm doing it, not having any problem with the color matching between cans or anything like that, no tiger stripes.
I'm interested in seeing others' can jobs also though.

Re: spary paint
What do you mean by 'hold up', are you talking durability, UV resistance, both? Any other aspects?
My car will be kept in the garage, driven in nice weather, etc, so hopefully the can job lasts for a few years at least. It is clear coated with ?Polyerethane? clear.

Re: spary paint
Be extremely careful with what you are spray painting the door jambs with. TALK TO YOUR PAINTER FIRST (or a paint pro if you are doing it yourself). There are all different formulations of paint, and they can have very bad reactions with each other if you don't pay attention to what types you are using.

Re: spary paint
I did my jams a long time ago ( before I knew better) What a mess when i went to go repaint it. I had forgot that i did the jams with rattle cans. Right when I sprayed my first coat of base. All that paint lifted. I had to sprip everything. If u plan on repainting your car in a year or so. Try to just save up a little more and get it done with atleast single stage paint. Cuz it will cost u alot more down the road.

Re: spary paint
i removed all of the fenders, hood, nose etc; as the car will be painted completley (april 16th).. then removed things liek the coolant overflow tank, (a/C was already removed) misc wires, vac lines, hoses, the set of relays mounted on teh firewall, etc;
then i took some 220 sandpaper, along with some 0 grade steel woll and some 00 grade,a nd hand-sanded down all of the red paint in the engine bay; i also had previously degreased the areas too. i then took some high heat metal primer, an XO rust white color(for contrast) and applied 2-3 coats .. i used a heat gun to heat all the sheetmetal prior to spraying it, because even tho my garage had the heat running, paint and primer cstick/cure better if the metal is hot.. i did the engine bay in 3 stages; pass side, front body/chassis light bar areas; then drivers side..
even before i primered anyhting, i took about 5 hours to mask off all wiring which i would not be removing, the master cyl, strut-tower mounts) line-lock, hood release cable, and engine blcok, headers, relay wires, etc.. that took a wwhile and was a major pain, but im glad i did it, i had no overspray on anyhting later on.. after the primer had dried and cured for a few hours, i sprayed the red, a high heat Bright Red color by XO rust, i used 4 cans, did 3-4 coats of paint, and also did this in 3 stages(3 different days).. then also appllied 2 coats of high heat Clear Cote rattle caned.
then after a few days, i unmasked everyhtring, then primered and painted the strut tower mounts wit the white primer and a semi-gloss black, and a clear cote,; i also painted the battery tray and tray where the vacum canister is a rust resistant flat black, as well as a few other things; i also picked up a can of "chrome" colored spray paint and primered and painted the windshield wiper motor, which GM made Blue for some reason, but now mine is silver/chrome;
i still have to pass inspection, then remove all of the A.I.R. equiptment and hoses, as well as install my new Proform valve-covers , install my custom cut brushed aluminum plate over the AC and Blower motor holes in the firewall, and do a few more cleanup things, but thats after the car is completley painted in a month..
it turned out really great in my opinion; it was much easier that i had the fenders, and hood off of the car too. it looks TONS beter than the gross dead-red that was in there, and i liek it a lot.. liek i said it took about 25-30 hours on lots of different days of work, but its somethign anyone here is capable of doing, just sand down the old paint real well, even down to the metal if necessary, and use a good primer, paint, clear, with some heat resistant qualities .... any other questions .. feel free to ask me

Re: spary paint
ok thanks, i plan to do the same as soon as i get the interior stripped, looks like i have a lot of work ahead of me.
instead of high heat paint, would regular spray paint work?

Re: spary paint
well, im sure it would work; but i dont know if it would last.. the heat of the engine over time would probably fade the color, im assuming.. on my car , i have an open cowl hood, so most of my heat is vented out, but i still chose to use some high heat paint
just make sure that when u sand everyhtign down, get it till all the rust is gone, liek on ur strut tower mounts; otehrwise it will bubble back up and look kinda bad...good lcuk, its fun tho

Re: spary paint
I just painted the front of my TA with a rattle can this weekend...the old paint was peeling off and exposing the gold on the ground effects. It was originally a black and gold TA like the recaro ed but someone had it painted all black...I went to my local parts store and got the paint some primer and a can of clear coat...after alot of sanding and preping it looks 99.9999% better than what it did and the paint matched perfectly, I can see a few little flaws in my sanding job and black is the hardest color to paint it will show the slightest imperfection in your body work thats why I say 99.9999% better...lol! I also had a broken grill insert and I found one on ebay and got it for $5 what a steal, just waiting for it to come now so I can get my baby lookin good. I am going to try to post a before shot (DONT KNOW HOW TO POST PIC ON THIS SITE) and I will post a pic after I get my insert installed.

Re: spary paint
My ongoing progress...
My camera batteries died and it was getting dark soon so I don't have any current pics besides those (I was working my way to the other side when it died).
