Runs in clear

I've got a ?. We have some runs in the clear coat. How long do I have to wait before I can sand them out. What grit paper should I use to start sanding on them and then finish with. We also have a spot that is a little dry. What direction should we sand or does that matter? After the sanding is done what should we start with to polish it back out? I've never tried polishing a car after painting it. we have so many runs in this car we don't have a choice. I think the humidity and the fact that to much clear was added at one time was our problem. Any detail instructions will be helpful or a link to how to do it. Thanks!!

A razor blade works great for knocking down the high spots of the run. First take the blade and drag it across a piece of 1000 grit paper. Then bend it into a slight curve. Tape the area around the run so you dont sand or scrape the other paint just yet.

Scrape the run down till its almost flat. Then take some 1000 grit paper and sand it flat. After take some 2000 grit and sand to get rid of the 1000 grit scratches.

I use a wool pad with 3m finesse it II for the compound first pass. Then with a blue foam pad meguires #9 to polish and get rid of swirl marks.

Heres what we did, we sanded the runs down with 1000g and now are going to finish them with 2000 is that ok? AFter that can we really make it shine like the rest? That is my biggest fear. If we can get a high speed buffer how do we go about polishing it up? We need to know everything so that we don't mess it up. The rest of the clear looks like glass!! Awesome.

Yeah the 2000 will take out the 1000 grit scratches. Then get a wool pad and buff with the finesse it II. that will make it shine and take out the 2000 scratch. This will leave swirls...so then take the foam polishing pad with meguires #9 this will leave it swirl free and glassy.

Just tape the corners and edges and dont run the buffer over them. It will cut thru the paint fast on the edges.

Your local autobody should have everything you need.

Harbor freight has a cheap buffer for around 30.00 should do the job.

After I sand the runs out can I leave it like that for a little bit or do I have to polish it now? I'd like to push the car outside and let it sit in the sun, can I do that without it being poished? I need to paint the doors and then put it all back together.

Yeah that should be fine, the meduim cut is your compound. And the swirl remover is your polish. Try out a small area first using both till you get the hang of it.

It will pull the solvents out faster if you set it in the sun. Just help it cure that much faster. The longer you wait to buff it the more work it will take. But that might be a good thing if you havent done it before. Less chance of burning thru.

Go here there is a board for color sanding some good info there might want to read thru it.
