do u have VATS system in ur car?
if yes Im not sure if that'll be ur problem hopefully not
but i heard a case where the key needs correct signal module(the little metal chip)
in order to pass the security system and im not sure if dealer can make them..
hope it works out for u though

being a 91 rs, you have vats(that little resistor chip in the key). and for lost keys, this is bad. you can bring your ownership info to the chevy dealership, but i highly doubt they still have your VATS code on file. they didnt have mine. so what i had to do was call a locksmith, and he had to try each one until he found the one that worked. my code turned out to be #11 of 15, and it cost me about $285. the reason the price was so high is because he had to make 10 keys trying to find the right code, plus he made 2 sets of keys after that. (door and ignition).

because as he stated there's 15 VATS code
and if ur lucky u could make it in the first 5 or so and paying less in total.
another option is to bypass VATS
which i dont know how but i heard its possible.
good luck

I'll just get the key if need be with no chip and I'll pull the lower column cover down and use the 15possible resistors and until I locate the right one..pulling the battery cable between attempts. When i locate the correct one I'll either tap the line with the resistor or I'll go have the correct key banged out. I was hoping I wouldnt have to do this though....bummer..oh well this is my LT1 project car and you have do what you have to do....damn..thanks for the info fellows...Kris
Does the dealer at least have the key codes on file?...

That will be such a relief if so...I already have a buttload of work to do pulling the LT1 out and tossing the 305. I really don't need anymore pita's...I'll let you guys know what the dealer says tomorrow. Thanks again for all the assistance...

Just thought I'd post this cause I purchased my car without a single key and half of the steering column was hanging from a previous attempt of being stolen. If you have access to a device that creates resistance, like I did since I work in a shop ..I think its called a "carbon pile" or something similar ..if anybody works or had worked in a shop its very similar to a battery load tester with a large dial on it.I then had to get all the ranges of each 15 codes.During each one ,you try you have to wait 4 minutes in between tries and of course mine had to be next to the last one.I didnt even have the title yet as it came with a bill of sale which I couldnt go to the dealer. The device I had was smaller and kinda old,but it worked.Maybe someone knows the correct name for it.I guess anything that can create resistance will work. For 285 bucks I could make each resistor number and still have enough money left over to put else where.OUCH..thats gotta hurt, but if you need your car that bad???..you got to do what you got to do..
