Bulletproof Rear Window Needed
Does anyone know of a place in which I could find either a bulletproof glass or lexan/polycarbonate rear hatch window for an 89 Camaro?

I think the easiest way to accomplish this is to find a company that sells the window tint/film geared towards home protection and natural disaster protection (hurricane/typhoon). Some of you might have seen the commercials or whatever. The product is usually geared towards home use. You apply this thick tint/film that will prevent debris from flying through a window during a hurricane or something, or prevents thieves from just breaking a window to someones house and entering. The marketing for these products usually shows someone shooting a gun at the window, and while the glass does break the bullet will not pass through. The tint/film is a special material, very thick (like 10+mm), and you can still see through it. This would be do-able on the rear because the window does not go up and down, the only thing is it would be hard to apply the tint/film because of the complex compound curves of the rear hatch glass. Probably not do-able on the side windows because the tint/film is so thick, might not work well (maybe do-able with manual windows, dunno). The reason I've considered this idea is not because I'm afraid of gun fire, but instead to prevent a smash and grab type robbery of car audio equipment. They would be able to break the glass, but not able to get at anything inside the car. But hey would probably also work if someone shot at you.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I saw some place that sold an aftermarket hatch with what looked like a flat piece of glass. You would probably have to strengthen it up and do some modifications to it, but I would look into that.

Even if the window is bullet proof, a bullet would probably have no trouble going through the sheet metal/ body of these cars...
The only parts of the car that would really stop a bullet would probably be the engine block and trans...

First off, as far as I know you cannot get curved bullet proof glass. Hence Humvees and Brinks trucks having only flat square glass. Second, Dan is right... for a bullet, sheet metal is like paper. I've put .308 through half inch steel. So you're going to need to armor the whole car if you want real protection. This will only weigh maybe a ton so that 350 that's "a'comin" according to your profile better get on the express train. Along with a beefier trans and brakes. I really am curious what your intent here is.

You can also get it from mcmaster carr. It's very expensive. Get 1/2" thick stuff. You can lay it over your current hatch, and heat it up to form it to shape. Then move over the latch mechanism, and hold up shocks. Weight will be comparable. It won't be as translucent, more opaque, smoked almost.
A curved outwards surface (convex?) would be better than a flat panel, as it would deflect bullets. Then again, I still wouldn't feel safe in a 3rd gen with a bullet proof rear glass, if I was being shot at.
Protection against thieves I can see. I still think hiding in the bushes with a crowbar, then beating the daylights out of whoever is brave enough to trash your car, would do the trick. Once or twice, then nobody will ever come after it again.

Well I do make frequent trips to "the ghetto" and I have been shot at a few times before. Think about if you are driving away, if someone shoots at you it would most likely hit your rear hatch. This isnt the only reason, Im also looking for one for thieves/vandal protection although if I heard a window break I would be out their with my nightstick or a baseball bat in a matter of 10 seconds, and me being a good sized person (about 6'3") they'll probably be in a coma for a while. The other reason I have is that a friend of mine has had to replace his rear hatch glass two times so far because his sub's broke it. My system will be louder than his, and the subs will be directly pointed toward the glass so just imagine what will happen to that window.

if your buddy's system broke that glass what in the heck does he have. ive seen full out competition subs in theses not breaking them when pushing 16 db's. i don;t think that that is why his broke.

I am far from what you could consider an audiophile, and I may be mistaken here, but it seems that it would be almost impossible to shatter your hatch with your subs. The major reason here being simply that there is no positive seal around the windows. Long before you build up enough pressure to shatter the thick, tempered glass of the hatch, the seal around the windows would give way to bleed off the pressure. I guess that it would be possible that you could somehow match the harmonic frequency of the glass with a tone from subs in order to shatter it; however, you would have to be dead on with the tone and seeing as how the average HF for glass is somewhere in the upper 800Hz area (IIRC), I seriously doubt that it would be an easy feat.
Like i said, I may be totally mistaken here... if I am, take it with a grain of salt.

Ya, my friend isnt exactly the best driver in the world so their was probably some other factors that took part in his glass breaking that I didnt know about, but still their are two other reasons Im looking for the glass.
Thanks 88KARRV6 for the link, I think that is what I will go with when I do decide to replace the glass, although theirs alot of other work I will be doing before that.

Do you really think a cute piece of thick glass will save you if you get shot at? Listen to me, take advice from someone who has been shot at/shot at other people, if your that worried about it, get a gun and learn to fight back. A full size 9mm (one of the most predominant guns in the ghetto) holds an average of 15-17 rounds. Given a person of minimal ability, it is not hard to place 1 of those 17rds into a soft spot (ie- your drivers window, or your head). The best way to deter someone shooting at you is to shoot back. If youre running, youre a target. If you stand and fight, you are a threat and usually some ghetto punk will just run when the bullets start flying his way. Personally, i hope someone trys to carjack me. I keep an AK-47 w. a folding stock in my backseat under a towel. One time some punk kids shot an airsoft gun at me while i was on the interstate. When i reached into my backseat and held that AK out the window, they about sh*t their pants. It was great.
Too bad they didnt try to shoot me again, ive always wondered what 30 rounds of fully automatic 7.62 would look like ripping into a toyota camry full of thugs.

I agree completely with what you say, and for that reason I own several guns including a Glock 9mm, a 45, and a Tek-9 which is a worthless piece of sh*t because it jams far too easily. I will also be buying an AK very soon.
Anyway, my question was already answered

So you say you plan to put a 350 in it. In your list of 'future mods' in your sig you list 'beef up the 700r4'. Are you nt aware that your v6 700r4 will not bolt up to a 350...?
