Can you put a rmote hatch pop in an electric pull down car?

See tittle, my car ('89 RS) has the electric hatch pull down, I also have the harness for the remote release under the console. I have a switch on the way, what I need to know is if the solenoid listed in the tech article will physicly fit on an electric pull down mechanism?

Well, I pulled the elctric pulldown out of my 90 formula that didn't have the trunk switch and put it into my 88 that does have the trunk switch and it worked. everything bolted up fine.

I just did this last week to my RS. The solenoid replaces the key switch thingy that opens it now so that you can either use the key or the switch.

One other question, the harness/plug seems to be tied through the E-brake switch, is there some condition that has to be met before you can pop the hatch ? like for instance the switch looks to be in a vulnerable position and I would not like to repeatedly open my hatch while I was motoring down the road. Does the E-brake have to be set, or the key off or something ?

If I remember correctly, it has to be in park or neutral on an automatic car. The parking brake has to be up or the ignition off on manual cars. All the wiring is there for this, but you may be missing the black wire to the solenoid.

Well, if the car is in any drive gear, it will not activate (I can't remember if pulling the ebrake up while in gear will allow it either, it's been about 2 years since I converted my car to a manual).
On a manual trans car and the car is running, the ebrake has to be pulled up to activate the switch.

OH also , I have the black wire, but interestingly enough I don't have the black wire to the rear hatch struts for the defrost ( car had the rear window replaced at some point and I have the defroster) I added the switch but lack the long black lead from the kick pannel to the strut, and the groud wire on the other side, does anyone know where that short groud lead is screwed to ground ?

Mine is grounded to the body under the trim panel.
----------
The long wire runs along the drivers side under the carpet. On mine it is seperate from the taillight harness.

The selector has to be in park or neutral on an automatic car. The ebrake handle doesn't have anything to do with it.

Mine is a 5 speed and I can see the entire wire tapped into the E-brake switch. Without having the entire system or even a diagram in front of me, it seems like the E-brake has to be pulled to complete the circuit (groud signal or possibly allow a relay to be energized ? I'm not sure how they acomplish that with the key switch, as the 12+ seems to be present at all times at least in my car. (orange and black wire)

Sorry I see how that could be confusing, I can not confirm this, but I was under the impression that the hatch release was somehow inhibeted with the ignition on, I can see how you could require the E-brake switch to complete a ground circuit, but if you are using a ground interupt I dont see how it is interupted by turning on the ignition ( well easy enough with a realy but it doesn't sound like how it is done)

I guess I will install the parts and see how it works, and if I want/need to know more I will have to fork over the cash for a factory (helms) manual

man, you missed the deal Helms had, $37 shipped for the manual for pretty much any GM prior to 95.

The hatch release works regardless of whether the ignition is on or off.

It was a sale they had, not sure if they will have one again.
I bought one for my 88 since the normal price is $105 + shipping.

Feel free to post in teh organized racing forum, as there are a lot of auto-x'ers in there that can answer some questions as well, since I am still a noob at Solo events. this is my second year running auto-x.
just be warned that it's addicting.
