Where can I get "GM" Keys?

My z28 only came with one set of keys, which are the original set. I had them copied, but typically the copies are a off brand, ie my copies say "access" on the key blank...

So, does anyone know where I could get a "GM" marked key blank set. Then if I ordered a blank set, do you think Lowes, or some other store that copies keys would allow me to provide my own blanks?

Thanks!

Have you tried the dealer? Either the dealer or some place online should have GM blanks.

Getting to the dealership is difficult for me, too far to go on a lunch hour... I would much prefer to order on-line...
Thanks!

then no. They need to see your key pattern to make the new one, so it's not really something you can do online. I had one made based on my VIN once when I locked my keys into the car, and surprise surprise, it didn't work.

Just find time to hit a GM dealer. Every town in the country has some sort of GM dealer... it doesn't have to be the Chevy dealer, it can be any GM dealer.

(If available in your area) Mobile lock smith services will come to you and can duplicate the key. If you specify that you want a GM branded key they can provide that as well. Expect to pay for this type of serivce though...

He's not looking to have a key made, he just wants to buy blanks that have GM stamped on them. Since it isn't a VATS car, the blanks should be readily available. Might take some phone calls or some google searching to find them. Also might try calling the dealer and see if they would mail them if you prepaid with a credit card.

And to answer the original question, yes Lowe's or anyplace that makes keys would use your blanks.

What about VATS keys? I only have one set for my '92, and if I lose them, I'm screwed.

Also, I got a spare GM door key made at ACE Hardware, and it had GM stamped on the top of the key.

You need to find out what your VATS number is and then buy that key. I don't know if the dealer can still do that for you or not.

I know that you can order the regular (non VATS) keys from the paddock online, pretty sure other sellers like classic Industries, etc. carry them too.

as for getting them cut, you have a chance that lowes or Home Depot might cut it for you, you could ask, but some stores won't cut customer provided blanks.
smaller hardware stores like Ace or True-value will usually do it no problem.

Your GM dealer has a VATS tester and can tell you what your VATS code is for free (literally takes 10 seconds). VATS keys are a bit spendy from the dealer: $24-30 per each. Some dealers charge to cut them some don't. Likely if you bring your own keys they'll charge you for sure, if you buy the keys from them, they may not.

Take note those who want keys cut from your VIN: GM now requires proof of ownership to cut keys. This is because of the number of people who were pulling VINs from cars, getting keys made, and stealing them. As a dealer employee, I can tell you this is a real pita, but dealers can now be fined depending on local and state laws, so no matter how bad your sob story when you come in, they likely will not cut keys without documentation that you own the car (we require DL and registration or title that match).

Also, be aware on VATS cars that the wires on the ignition cylinders are prone to wear out, and replacement of the cylinder requires new keys as well since the cylinders are precoded. Another brilliant engineering triumph.

VATS keys are expensive. I know somebody at a GM dealer and it still cost me $45 per key with his discount.

they only sell the covers, not the keys themselves.
