Changing Panel Colors
I am wanting to paint the plastic interior panels in my car black. They are gray now, but I'm changing all the interior to black. My question is, what paint should I use and what would be the procedure for prepping the plastic before it's painted? I don't want the panels to look like they have been spray painted. I want them to look factory and clean. Any advice is appreciated. THANKS

Hey 1Fastz.
Is this the stuff you speak of
High-Perf Vinyl & Fabric Coating
Also, which black did you use on yours, flat black or gloss black?
It's a good idea to whipe it down the paint thinner first?

Yes, that is the right stuff. I used semi-gloss and I cleaned mine very good with 409 orange cleaner followed by rubbing alcohol.

I did the same thing, grey to black everything. I used VHT vinyl/carpet dye and I was amazed at how even and clean it looks. I would have actually considered using it on the carpet had I known. New carpet is pricey I you want good padding.

I read another post of someone using SEM brand. They said it was the best. Would paint thinner be okay on the plastic? My panels are indeed dusty so I would want to get them as clean and ready to paint as possible. My current carpet is gray now and I am changing it to black as well. I bought the rear deck and trunk carpet on ebay for about $120.00 shipped. Would it be a better idea and more cost effective to paint the carpet black instead or buying it new? I want it to look as good as possible.
I also bought a set of 4th gen. camaro seats and wanted to get them recovered in fake leather. Will the front and back seats I bought bolt up to my 3rd gen. without any problems or modifications?

Unless something has changed in these paints in the last few years, I have always been of the school of thought not to paint pieces that may be exposed to abuse of any kind. One seat belt buckle dropped against a panel or your kids banging around in the back seat has always chipped the paint...and if its gray underneath, its quite obvious. Carpet I couldnt even imagine. But new stuff comes out every year and maybe Im way off here, but I always try to get the color I need from the get go. If you want it to be a bit mroe uniform or something, you can always paint that with the black paint. At least that way if it chips it is hardly noticeable yet still looks brand new if the color you had originally was a bit faded or something. Just my take on it...
And carpet, I think its worth spending the money on new as you get new padding and can examine the floorboards and fix any questionable spots before laying the new carpeting down.

Good carpet is 100x better than dye, but cheap carpet is sometimes worse. I just got more than I expected out of the dye on the door panels.
Also, in regards to painting plastic that will be exposed to abuse. Do VERY light coats and only enough to cover... EXCESS PAINT MEANS EXCESS CHIPPING AND SCRATCHING. You'll have to be careful either way but (my opinion) the painted pieces look better than 16 year old factory black pieces.

I totally understand. I wanted to make sure that painting them would still make it look okay. I don't want to have to buy all new panels, but painting seems easier. As for the carpet, I will probably buy it new. Painting the carpet isn't on my list.
Will it be okay to use paint thinner to remove unwanted dirt and grime from the plastic panels or is there risk of damaging them?

You should eb alright so long as you put the thinner on a rag and wipe down your plastics as opposed to dumping thinner right on the plastic.

Dupi-color worked great on my fabric door panels. It's only been a few days but I don't see any problems coming up. I was gonna recover or replace anyway.
