Most of the time it's because water has leaked on it and the sun baked it dry and over and over again. It causes the material to deteriorate.

The only tears in my apholstery are from where I sit in the drivers seat...right on the end, so I could only assume it is from getting in the car.

sliding against the seat is part of it. friction causes all kinds of wear. and with a somewhat low car you can't help but slide. plus if ya's got a fatty it just makes it worse.
sun/water cause cause problems as said. and think about it. these cars are how old with how many miles? that's lots of years of abuse to hold up against. and that sun does wonders to parts.
but feel seats. yours are prolly little hard as far as the fabric goes. while a new cars seats the fabric should be more soft and supple fealing.
