Rotisserie is home made out of 2x6's
The black paint is all POR-15. I used there marine clean and metal ready products to prep the bare metal before paint.
Before pics:
All paint and undercoating was stripped using Aircraft Stripper.

Thats the tourque arm that connects to the crossmember, not the tranny.
As for the engine, at the moment i have no plans to mod it. Right now i don't even have enough cash for the T56. But one day when the car is together and running right, and everything else is done(body, interior, rims/tires), i'll start modding.
About the time frame...
I'm currently a college student and i'm rebuilding the car at my dad's house with his help. He used to be a mechanic about 15 years ago and hasn't done much with cars since then except for routine maintnence and repairs on his own vehicles. Its about a 3 hour drive from my campus to his house, so i only get to work on the car about on average 2 weekends a month. When i'm not there the car isn't really touched by anyone. The rottisirie was built back in october, so thats about 6 months its taken to strip and paint the underside. At the same time i'm the one paying for just about everything, so some times waiting till i have enough money for parts will slow us down.

Looks likes you welded in subframe connectors. I plan on doing the same while body is stripped. Hope our doors doors and fenders will align properly!
I will post some pics next month when they are completed.

I welded the SFC onto the car when it was on the rotissirie. I was a little concerned because i know they say to install them with the suspension loaded. My guess was so that all teh weight of the car was on the suspension where it belongs and not at other points, causing the car to flex. But with the car stripped it shouldn't be flexxing much, if at all.
My dad insisted that it will be fine, and i told him that if something is messed up, he's the one cutting them off the car
btw, they are spohn SFC's for anyone interested.

Way, Way, cool. I'd love to do that level of restore to my '84 Z28.
I have a few questions if you have the time to reply.
1) With all the hardware stripped off how much would you say the body weighs by itself?
2) How do you move it around? Just 4 strong backs at the four corners and lift?
3) How many man hours did it take you to strip the car all the way down?
4) Did you spray or brush on the POR-15
5) After patching and floating the dents in the body, are you going to spray the main body paint with the car stripped?
6) How much money have you got invested so far?
7) What/how did you degrease the body with before using the POR-15
8) What kinda of budget have to got set for your project?
Thanks

1) With all the hardware stripped off how much would you say the body weighs by itself?
I don't know an exact weight, but with 4 people you the car can be lifted. One person alone can lift one side of the car up if the other side is supported on jack stands.
2) How do you move it around? Just 4 strong backs at the four corners and lift?
to get it onto the rottisirie we placed the rear back under the car and rested the front of the car on a board that was attached to the back of the van. Once on the rotisirie, it is moved around with castors under the rotisirie.
3) How many man hours did it take you to strip the car all the way down?
Only the underside is stripped. The method i used, stripper->wire brush with hand->wire wheel, i'd say it took me a total of 2 straight weeks to do. But i usually only did small sections each weekend. i didn't want to burn myself out with the project since this was probably the most tedious task.
4) Did you spray or brush on the POR-15
Brush, the por-15 levels itself very nicely.
5) After patching and floating the dents in the body, are you going to spray the main body paint with the car stripped?
The fuel system, drivetrain, and suspension will be back on the car when the body is painted. But the body will be painted with all the body parts off.
6) How much money have you got invested so far?
Total with the cost of the car, all spohn components, roll cage, engine, rear, gas tank, is about 7 Grand. All work so far has been done by either myself or my dad so there has been no labor costs yet.
7) What/how did you degrease the body with before using the POR-15
I used POR-15's marine clean, followed by their metal ready.
8) What kinda of budget have to got set for your project?
No budget. I started this project with very little knowledge of cars and i'm learning as i go. If i find out i need something i buy it, or if something i bought doesn't work, i find what i need. Probably not the cheapest route, but how can i learn without trial and error.
Hope this all helps.

Thanks for the replys to my questions, I got one more.
How many man hours did it take to pull off all the hardware (engine, suspension, windows, interior, wiring, etc..) from the body?
Thanks,

Thats hard to say.
We got the engine compartment and interior stripped in about 2-3 days, then everything else i would say would take about 2 more days on top of that, depending on your experience. It probably took us longer then what many others would take, cause my dad had me do most of the work to gain experience, and since it's my car.

Thanks everyone for all the feedback!
I'll be sure to put more pics up in this thread as we make progress. Hopefully within the next month the rear will be back under the car.
That means LCA's, panhard bar, and sportline springs will also be installed. Shocks will need to be upgraded in the future.

From what my dad tells me thats about $200 in lumber. When we are done with it, i might put it up for local sale as long as i can make sure I can't be heald responisble for anything that may happen. Property or body injuries. If theres still chance of liability then we destroy it and find other use for the wood.

Thank you VERY much for those pics.Thinking I will be building one of those for the resto of my Z.I just can't justify the $800+ they want for a basic steel rotisserie just to use it once on my car since I don't plan to do full restos on a regular basis.
Very nice job on the car thus far, keep posting pics! That's something to be proud of...Very Impressive!

This is exactly what I want to do when I get the spare change. Keep the updates coming!
What are the dimensions on that rotisserie? Maybe make up a list on what ya need. I know ill have to make something like that. How is it holding up? I'm guessing its pretty damn sturdy. When you put the por-15, why is there still shiney metal on the bottom? what are those two pieces?
What color do you plan on painting it? I'll have to bookmark this thread.

thats awesome! id never even think of building a rotisserie. i helped my dad build a jig to hoist a truck bed and cab up so we could blast the underside, but that would have made it oh so much easier! good job!

I don't know any info on the rottisirie since i wasn't there when it was built. It is definatly sturdy. The wood can sway back and forth a bit, but i've yet to see or hear any cracking at all.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone!! I'll keep everyone updated, but like i stated above progress may be slow.

Yeah, def. get some measurements of the rotisserie if you can. When I finally get a house (sometime this year I hope) my 'bird is getting plucked clean. With a rotisserie it would make it ALOT easier!

For anyone interested, heres some pictures i took this weekend: (56K Sorry...)
Passenger side
Before with rusted holes patched:
After POR-15
Driver side
GM Spoiler w/ decklid that i picked up at a swap meet last weekend. For any North eastern people i got it at Spring Carlisle...
And the rear is all ready to go back into the car. Just needs the E-brake cables put back on. Shockes are the ones that came with the car. They are just temporary until i can afford new shocks and struts. Same goes with the breaks. Stock breaks till i can afford some baer or willwood's. I guess same goes for the rear end itself till I can afford a better one.

I tip my hat to you man. I only wish i had the resources and cash to do something like this. If I had my own place and my own garage I'd love to take my Z apart like this and completely re-do everything, so I know its done right, and I know it wont rust or fall apart on me. Keep up the good work man!

Does anyone thing it would have been a good idea to weld in some supports between the A and B pillars? (To try and keep the gap between the front and back of the t tops from closing in/twisting.)

What would be great is if you could take some pics of the rotisserie when the car is removed and use PAINT to put measurements in, wood size, etc.
Great job!

It would probably be a good idea to brace everything. Being that this was the first time we've tried anything like this we didn't even think about it then. Learn from your mistakes, but that could be one very expensive mistake.
Looking at the pictures of fbodymotorsports.com's 91 Vert that they put an ls1 into, i do not see any supports on their car while its sitting in their rottisirie.
----------
I know everyones dieing to get as much info on the rottisirie as possible. I assure you i will do my best to get everyone as much info on it as i can. Dimentions, lots of pictures, etc. For all the help i recieved from the TGO community, its the least i could atleast try to give back to everyone.

Looking real nice, keep posting the progress. I've been getting my 91 ready to POR 15 it. I was wondering how much you ended up spending on POR 15? My bird doesn't really have any rust, a few surface spots here and there, but what 3rd gen doesn't. I just want to make sure that I never do get any rust. So I've been planning on doing a big POR 15 job on it. I've been trying to get some extra input on the stuff and how easy or hard it is to use. Thanks, Jamie

I have down that i spent $401.68 at POR-15's website. Heh didn't realize i spent so much with them. BUT that includes more then just paint. I got about 2 gallons worth of paint from them, 8 seperate quarts, and after doing all the work that you see above i still have 2 quarts left. Most of the underside of the car has 4 coats on it. I was only planning for 3 coats, but because i bought semi-gloss black the first time i had to cover up the semi-gloss with the gloss black.
I also bought from them a gallon of marine clean and a gallon of metal ready.
Other items i bought from them:
Dauber kit
Mesh
2 tubes of POR-Patch(this stuff dries like a rock!)
Putty
...I'm probably missing something else too.
The stuff is easy to brush on. It levels itself out real nice, so you don't get any brush strokes left behind. Theres very little clean up, since you just throw whatever you use away when your done. If you do decide to use it, start out with a small amount in a small area and familiar your self with the prep, painting and clean up. I painted a small section of the floor pan one day and got my confidence up.
FWIW, i've never painted anything with any kind of paint before i painted the underside of the car.

The only time ive seen supports welded in was when they were replacing floors and rockers. That was on 69 camaros though. Not sure about anything else. If you have a welder I dont think it would hurt to weld up some support bars. Better safe than sorry I suppose. Do you plan on painting the car yourself? Thanks for taking your time to put up updates and answer questions.

I'll strip the car to bare metal, and I may do most of the paint prep, like block sanding and stuff. However i put too much time and money into the car already to not have a professional paint it for me. I'd be foolish too atempt to paint it myself.
I'll probably paint the engine compartment though.
