Popup delete, flushmount lights :)

Here is what i have been working on:

(It actually isnt sitting high on the left of that image, its level)

The lights are Hella 90mm Modules, currently have the H7s/ECE.

Currently the problems are only on the covers. That bend in the front refracts the light (for those in the know, i have impact angles from 90 -15, plexi in 1.51 index). I want to try and keep the lights flush, but would require something else to work.

The mounting system is really simple. 4 holes on top, enlarge the circler opening for the low beam, self tapper with spring for the bottom 1 per light.

I was looking at the C5R lights, but wanted to try and keep it below/at hood level. BTW, i know my hood and front cover are messed up, all measurements are from the original headlights.

Ideas? Comments? Suggestions?

Ok, i changed the cover design. Instead of going up and out i went in. I started the curve above the light. It is completely flat from about 1/2" above the light and meets the front of where the previous light ended. So now i have the defined cutoff of the projector light, and very very little of the beam is lost.

now i just need to aim the lights better

Ill try to get pics tonight.

Get yourself some button heads screws so they don't stand out so much. Or better yet, counter sink your holes and use flat head screws.

I love birds but hate popup lights so I'd like to do this someday as well.

2 suggestions on possibilities

The first would be to extend the cover to fill in the notch on the bumper and cover the turn signal as well. That would keep the cover flush with the hood yet not need to bend to follow the lines of the edge of the hood.

The second suggestion is to make a piece that had the same shape as the old headlight in the down position, then add 2 cone shaped notches to french in the new lights in their current position. While this wouldn't make them flushmounts, it would keep them under the profile of the hood and tie the new lights in with the the original styling.

Re: Popup delete, flushmount lights :)

I guess what you might mean is something like the C5R?
Don't know if it'd work, but I've thought about getting a set of 94 or so sunfire headlamps to mock up.

Re: Popup delete, flushmount lights :)

You should design it to cover the entire space on bumper where turn signal and headlight is. That would be great. Try to merge your idea with the cover in the following pic and see how that turns out, I think it would be awesome.

Re: Popup delete, flushmount lights :)

Not to rain on you or discourage you, but I hate it

Pop up headlights are one of the defining features in a newer firebird

But since this is technical and not opinionated boards, heres some useful reading/suggestions

Several mods include the "lazy eye" where the headlights only move a small amount

Redraif uses a non-pop up mount similar to the method posted, but then again she has the 85-90 nose and there is quite a bit more room

I forget his name, but there was a guy in the fabrication boards about 2 years ago that made an entire tube frame front, fiberglassed a new nose similar to the original and incorporated sunfire fixed headlights

Good luck to your project

Re: Popup delete, flushmount lights :)

Nice fab work, but I think the flip up lights go better with the overall look of the car.

Does that mod give you any better lighting than the stock flip ups?

I think they are pretty nice looking, good design and all, but like someone said above and I know you're gonna change it, I'm not a big fan of the screws sticking up.

Was that the guy who made that crazy looking front end and used the latest style sunfire lights? Not the ones in the post above. His car was black or primer or something. That looked nuts.
