Paint Gun thread

IMHO there should be a stickied paint gun thread. For newbies like me who want to purchase a paint gun and are unsure of what to buy.

There are lots of brands(DeVILBISS, SATA, Bergen, Binks, Sharpe, SIP) and unlclear terms.

For example, what does nozzle size matter and what should I look for? Does it matter what I intend to paint with it?
I am looking for a gun to paint basecoat and clearcoat with.

Gravity feed or Suction feed? From what I've heard gravity feed is the way to go.

Right now it seems a DeVILBISS FLG-651G Finishline 3 is my best bet, it's 78 bucks without freight.

What are your experiences reccomendations? Maybe this thread could be stickied if it proves usefull?

Hmm, well I've been searching for paint gun systems and I've picked up a few things on the way. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Nozzle sizes indicate what sort of paint you'd want to spray with them. For thicker and higher viscosity paints like primer and spray-on bodyfiller you want nozzle sizes of atround 1.8mm or so.

For basecoat/clearcoat painting you'll want a 1.3mm nozzle, atleast this applies for water-based paints I think, for thicker oilbased ones I think maybe 1.5mm? Or am I just plain wrong on this?

I've been thinking about this paint system, two guns, all metal and DeVILBISS brand, from The Eastwood Company

I use a 1.4 fluid tip for spraying color and clear. I've got three guns

Primer-Astro
Color=DeVilbisss GTI Millenium
Clear=Iwata LVPH 400

for a novice id get a GTI. they can be had for around $250 and will be quite user friendly.

There seems to be a difference in using solvent or waterbased paints as well. Apparently in europe there will be a move away from solvent based paints in favor of water based ones due to new laws coming into effect in 2007.

Can a solvent and water based paint have the same color code, I mean that they can look the same?
