Primer - Spray gun
I am planning on doing some body work. What gun /tip should I use to spray the primer?
I presume it is better to use a compressure powered gun to shoot primer, rather than aerosol cans. (Later I want to set up my garage as a booth and paint the car.
What significance is HVLP guns for an amateur? Are there advantages that go beyond the environmental issues?
I don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money...but I want decent quality also.

For a good primer gun go look at harbor fright for there HVLP gun. Around $50
I use that gun to spray primer with. I always get good results from it.
Theres a few benifit to HVLP.. Less over spray. That means more goes on your car with out painting everything in your shop/yard, etc
Also the amount of paint/primer used.. The HVLP guns will use less paint to do the same job and that means less money you have to spend out on paint.
Here's a pic of my 1988 camaro right after I sprayed it and the primer had time to dry, and a pic of my dad's 1982 firebird. On his firebird I took the pic after we un taped it.

i used to be a painter for a living. when you use spray guns every day you can tell the diffence between cheap guns and expensive guns. if this is just a one time thing i would buy a cheapy gun just to save money. i would use a better gun when you spray base/clear or single stage. as far as tip size goes, a 1.4 or 1.5 will doo just fine. i used to prime using a sata jet 95hvlp with a 1.4 tip. as far as hvlp goes Night rider327 hit the nail on the head.
if you want try ebay, i have gotten some really good deals from there. these are the only guns that i will spray with.

some of the good guns to look at are
NR2000 hvlp(good base/clear gun)
nr95(good prime gun)
sata 90 is an ok gun.
dont even bother with the digital guns. the digital display is nice to have but you really dont need it. hope this helps you.

I heard for a high build primer surfacer, you want a big tip, like a 2.0mm or 1.7mm...
then your base/clears you want the little guys, 1.3mm.... It probably gives a recommendation on the can of paint that you're using.

i have found that when you spray with the larger tips the material does not spray out very nice(very peely). the smoother the finish of the primer the less sanding you have to do. thats why i use a 1.4 tip. if you put 3 good coats of primer on with a 1.4 tip you will fine.

I got to agree with heavy chevy. The bigger tips will get it done faster but it don't look near as smooth once done.
What you see in my two pics has not been sanded. It's high build surfacer and I put it on with a 1.4mm tip. I layed down 2 good full coats (letting it flash between each coat)., let it dry good then un taped the car.
