retracting dash cupholder

in case you can't alreay picture it: http://www.safari4x4.com.au/80scool/...up_holder.html

Anyone try to mount a retracting cupholder on the dash yet? I've seen many options for cupholder fabrication or even the universal cupholders you mount... however, to have a retracting cupholder that could lay flush on the dash when not in use would be awesome. The problem I see is the depth of the devices! Is there an area behind the dash with a lot of extra space?

Anyway, I'm currently in the planning phase of fiberglassing an addition to the dash, to make room for such a device.. possibly placed above the center console dash area.

I got one very similar to that but it holds 2 cupholders, the front has the same texture as the dash. Its just about a 1/8 inch almost to long in my 91-92 dash due to round edges. It may work in the 82-92 dash, but still require some kind of mounting.

But i would also like to know a good way to mount this.

G o d that was the worst flippin feature EVER on the Dodge Rams, I dunno how many times I went over a speed bump and had soda all over the radio.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/88-94...spagenameZWDVW

but yea, i can definitely see that happening.. soda spillin all over the stereo.. blech.

I had considered under the vents but like KissThis said the drink spilling on the radio.

Something that could be done is move the radio under the vents and the mount you retracting cup holder where the radio was.

My retracting ones are more of a box style. But I found out that they where was part of a custom kit to go in car dashes that offered radio mounting a storage slot, and then one retracing cup holder. It was sold by jegs or summit one. The one I have was made for camaros. And have everything but the radio holder, but with the others mounted in the brakets and a custom face plate made it would pertty much factory.

Those 88-94 Pick up ones almost be perfect for under the vents, since the sides and bottom are enclosed, and would flow fairly nice under there. But again the issue of any thing liquid hitting the radio.

I would like to see this done one day. I never did like the idea of the ash tray cupholders for some reason.

Try the drink holder from the Cavailiers. '91-96 I think. The chevy one includes some air vent portions, but it might work. See them all the time in the bone yards.

Jim.

Hey, I got 2 of those in my '04 Hyundai! Just perfect for a can of Mountain Dew. I wonder if one could be retrofitted to a 3rd gen?

one more possibility.. that moving the stereo beneath the vents intrigued me, but the dins on the console are tilted! a din cupholder would make your drinks tilted and even easier to spill. by the way, i found this little number, and at the same time.. kind of adapted murdock's idea.

http://www.audiooutfitter.com/store/999000.html[/url]

i've seen those din-slot cupholders around on ebay.. like from a saab or something. mount that thing under vents using the metra housing, (assuming it fits), pop a din cupholder in, and bam -- a cupholder without having to fabricate a fitting or cut up my car. (still there's the spillage.. but meh.)

Yea you can get those also from Circuit city. I have considered it to.

Yeah I started thinking about the bad slant at which it would be.
Could build a housing for it to sit straight but would look out of place.

I think that considering the length of a retracting cup holder when retracted fully i think it will be just a little a head of the radio.
